Chapter 3 - The Unraveling of the Lie

The transition from the orderly divorce hearing to a criminal inquiry happened in a heartbeat. Justice Halloway didn't need a lawyer to tell him what he was looking at; he was a former prosecutor, and he knew a felony when he saw one. He immediately signaled for the courtroom to be sealed.
"This hearing is suspended," Halloway announced, his voice booming. "Bailiff, contact the District Attorney’s office and have an investigator here within fifteen minutes. Mark Sterling, you are not to leave this room. Ms. Vance, you are likewise detained."
Mark finally lost his composure. He stood up, his face flushed a dangerous shade of crimson. "This is an invasion of privacy! That evidence was obtained illegally by a child! You can't use that!"
"Mr. Sterling," the judge replied, his voice chillingly calm, "you are currently in a courtroom, not a boardroom. Your attempt to defraud this court, combined with the evidence of systematic embezzlement from your wife’s family estate, is no longer a matter of civil dispute. You are looking at a prison sentence that will outlast your current arrogance."
As the realization hit him, Mark’s legs seemed to buckle. He slumped back into his chair, his eyes darting toward the gallery, looking for a way out that didn't exist. Sarah, meanwhile, felt a wave of relief so intense it made her dizzy. She looked over at Lily, who was now being held by a kind-faced clerk. The little girl looked exhausted but relieved.
The next hour was a blur of chaos. Two investigators from the economic crimes unit arrived, their presence signaling the absolute ruin of Mark’s meticulously constructed lie. They began cross-referencing the files on the tablet with public records and bank statements. As they worked, they called out findings that made the gallery murmur in disbelief: "Two million dollars in offshore accounts," "Forged property deeds," "Tax evasion dating back four years."
Sarah sat in the witness chair, watching the scene unfold. She saw the precise moment Mark realized he was going to prison. The mask fell away, revealing the cowardice beneath. He turned to Elena, his voice a guttural whisper that carried in the dead air: "You told me the kid didn't know how to use the device. You idiot, you promised me this was locked down."
Elena’s face contorted with hatred. She looked at him with the same vitriol she had shown Sarah only moments ago. "I told you to be more careful, Mark! You were the one who kept the files on the desk! You were the one who was too greedy to just walk away!"

The judge watched the two of them turn on each other, a sick expression of disgust on his face. He looked over at Sarah, who was cradling her stomach, her tears finally falling—not from sadness, but from the weight of justice being served.
"The truth," the judge said softly, echoing through the now-hushed room, "always has a way of finding its voice, even when everyone tries to keep it silent."
