Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the House of Westwood

The sound of Claire’s voice lingered in the cavernous ballroom long after the audio file ended, hanging in the air like a ghost refusing to depart.
Caleb was the first to break.
“It’s a fake!” Caleb shouted, his voice cracking with sheer, unadulterated panic as he backed away from the crowd. “AI generation! Deepfake audio! Adrian, you can’t possibly believe a computer-generated file! Claire hated corporate paperwork, she didn't know anything about offshore accounts—!”
“Shut your mouth, Caleb,” Adrian said.
He didn't yell. He didn't wave his arms. He simply turned away from the console and walked down the steps of the dais toward his brother.
Caleb stumbled backward, tripping over the hem of his bespoke tuxedo trousers and crashing hard against a mahogany side table, shattering a crystal vase into a thousand glittering shards.
Adrian stood over him, looking down with a gaze so devoid of mercy that Caleb looked like a cornered rat.
“You knew,” Adrian whispered.
“I—I didn't! I swear to God, Adrian, I didn't know she was going to—!” Caleb blurted out, instantly betraying himself before realizing what he had just confessed.
The gallery gasped. Margaret Westwood let out a strangled cry and slid down the wall, collapsing onto the marble floor in a dead faint. Nobody rushed to help her.
Adrian looked past Caleb toward Madison.
The veneer of the untouchable socialite was completely gone. Madison’s makeup was streaked with sweat and tears, her designer dress wrinkled, her posture slumped in defeat. She looked at the crowd of powerful men and women who had spent the evening celebrating her upcoming wedding—the very people who were now staring at her with undisguised horror and disgust.
“You pathetic piece of trash,” Madison hissed, her voice suddenly shifting from fear to pure, venomous malice as she glared at Natalie. “You and your sister thought you owned everything! You thought you could lock me out of the boardroom! I earned my place here! I built this empire with Caleb while you were off playing golf and pretending to be a CEO!”
“You murdered my wife,” Adrian said, closing the distance between them with slow, deliberate steps.
Madison sneered, her eyes flashing with defiance. “Prove it! An old audio file found in a secret wall panel? No prosecutor in Cook County would touch that without a chain of custody! The brake lines were destroyed in the crash fire, Adrian! There’s nothing left to examine!”
“Are you sure about that?”
A calm, deep voice echoed from the grand double doors of the ballroom.
Everyone turned.
Standing in the doorway was a tall man in a dark federal prosecutor’s suit, flanked by two armed FBI special agents in tactical windbreakers.
Adrian recognized him immediately—Thomas Vance, the lead federal investigator for white-collar crime and transport safety in the Northern District of Illinois.
Thomas Vance stepped into the ballroom, holding a thick manila folder and a federal search warrant.
“Good evening, Mr. Westwood,” Vance said, nodding respectfully to Adrian before turning his cold, piercing gaze toward Madison and Caleb. “I’m Special Agent Vance, U.S. Department of Justice. Miss Cole, Mr. Westwood... you’re both under arrest for federal wire fraud, securities manipulation, conspiracy to commit murder, and destruction of federal evidence.”
“On what grounds?!” Madison screamed, trying to bolt toward the side exit.
Marco stepped directly into her path, crossing his massive arms. Madison bounced off his chest and fell hard onto the floor.
Vance opened his folder, holding up a certified document.
“Three hours ago, acting on an anonymous tip routed through a secure corporate whistleblower channel—courtesy of a very brave housekeeping staff member who noticed suspicious financial ledger printouts in Miss Cole’s private trash bins—federal agents raided the primary automotive salvage yard in Lake Forest where Claire Westwood’s Mercedes was impounded three years ago.”
Vance paused, letting the words sink into the silent room.
“We recovered the remaining steering knuckle and brake assembly housing. It wasn't destroyed in the fire. The garage mechanic who altered the hydraulic lines turned himself in an hour ago and signed a full confession implicating Miss Cole and Caleb Westwood.”
Caleb buried his face in his hands and began to sob uncontrollably.
Madison stared up at the federal agent, her face completely drained of color. The titanium handcuffs clicked around her wrists with a crisp, final sound.
As the agents hauled Madison away, she cast one final, venomous look toward Adrian.
“You’ll never run the company without me, Adrian,” she spat as they dragged her past the crystal chandelier. “You’ll be alone forever.”

Adrian didn't even blink.
He watched her go until the heavy doors closed behind her, sealing her fate. Then, he turned around, walked up the steps of the dais, and looked out over the ruins of his family’s dynasty.
