Chapter 4 - Shattered Illusions

The roar of the helicopter blades provided a steady, rhythmic background hum as the aircraft lifted smoothly off the snow-covered lawn of the Miller estate. Inside the warm, leather-appointed cabin, the four children sat strapped into their seats, sipping warm hot chocolate from thermos cups provided by the flight crew.

Leo looked out the window as the sprawling estate shrank into a tiny dot against the vast white mountains. He turned to Kesha, his young face thoughtful.

"Mom?"

"Yes, Leo?" Kesha asked, adjusting Toby’s blanket.

"Is that man really our father?"

Kesha looked at her son, seeing the incredible intelligence shining in his eyes. She never lied to her children; she had always promised them complete honesty, tailored to what their young minds could process.

"Biological father, yes," Kesha answered gently. "He gave you his DNA. But being a father means being there when you have a fever, teaching you how to ride a bike, holding your hand when you're scared, and loving you every single day. He didn't do any of those things. I did. And your uncles did."

"So he’s just a stranger with our face?" Sophie asked, taking a sip of her hot cocoa.

Kesha smiled softly, kissing Sophie’s forehead. "Exactly, sweetheart. Just a stranger with your face."

Meanwhile, back inside the Miller estate, the aftermath of Kesha’s exit was nothing short of a total nuclear detonation.

Chloe had already packed her bags, throwing her designer luggage into the back of her sports car. She hadn't even bothered to say goodbye to Eleanor. The engagement ring remained sitting on the marble table where Victoria had placed it after picking it up off the floor.

In the private study, Arthur stood by the bar, pouring himself a third glass of neat scotch with trembling hands. His hair was messy, his tie undone, his eyes bloodshot.

The heavy oak door slammed open. Eleanor stepped inside, flanked by Victoria. Eleanor’s face was devoid of the tears she had shed earlier; in their place was a terrifying, cold fury that Arthur had only seen a few times in his life.

"Put the glass down, Arthur," Eleanor commanded, her voice dropping an octave lower than normal.

"Mom, please," Arthur groaned, taking a deep gulp of the burning amber liquid anyway. "I’m having a nightmare. That woman... she planned this whole thing! She wanted to destroy my life! She wanted to humiliate me in front of Chloe and the board members!"

"You destroyed your own life eight years ago!" Eleanor shouted, slamming her walking stick against the hardwood floor. "Do you have any idea what you have done?! You abandoned four children! Four Miller children!"

"They aren't Millers!" Arthur yelled back, defensively pulling his shoulders up. "She raised them alone! She named her company Vance Technologies! She doesn't even use my name!"

"And thank God for that!" Victoria cut in sharply, crossing her arms as she glared at her brother. "If she had used your name, she would have been associated with a spineless coward who ran away to Europe because he was scared of diapers! Do you realize who Kesha Vance is, Arthur? She is one of the most powerful tech executives in Texas! Her reputation is immaculate! Yours is currently lying in pieces on the floor!"

"I'm a partner at Miller Global!" Arthur argued, pointing at his chest. "I built the European distribution network!"

"You didn't build anything!" Eleanor barked, stepping directly into Arthur’s personal space. "Your father and I gave you that position to keep you from failing! And today, you embarrassed this family beyond measure. Do you think the board members who were in that room ten minutes ago are going to forget this? By tomorrow morning, every major investor in Denver will know that Arthur Brooks abandoned his quadruplets and lied to his own mother for nearly a decade!"

Arthur swallowed hard, the panic finally beginning to break through his alcoholic haze. "Mom... you can't let this affect my standing at the firm. I'm up for Senior Managing Director next month!"

Eleanor looked at her son with a mixture of profound sorrow and absolute disgust.

"There will be no Senior Managing Director position for you, Arthur," Eleanor said flatly. "Effective immediately, I am suspending your executive privileges at Miller Global Logistics pending a full review by the board of trustees. And as for your personal allowance from the family trust... it is permanently frozen."

Arthur dropped his glass. It shattered against the rug, spilling scotch everywhere. "What?! Mom, you can't do that! That's my inheritance!"

"That trust was created by your grandfather to support the future generations of this family," Eleanor said, her voice shaking with absolute resolve. "Generations that you tried to deny existed. Until you make this right with Kesha and those four innocent children, you will not receive a single dime from this family."

"Mom, she won't even talk to me!" Arthur pleaded, dropping to his knees just as his mother had done earlier, reaching for her coat. "She threatened to buy our company! She doesn't want my money!"

May you like

"Then you had better figure out what she does want, Arthur," Victoria said coldly, opening the study door for her mother. "Because if you don't find a way to earn her forgiveness, you are going to spend the rest of your life as a broke, disowned nobody who lost everything because he was too blind to see the fortune he walked away from."

Eleanor walked out without looking back, leaving Arthur kneeling in the middle of his ruined study, surrounded by the smell of spilled liquor and the crushing weight of his own total undoing.
