Chapter 7 - The Desperate Ploy

The psychological destruction of Arthur Brooks was nearly complete, but a cornered animal rarely surrenders without one final, desperate lash of its claws.
Two days after the brutal meeting in the Vance Technologies boardroom, Arthur refused to sign the voluntary termination papers. Driven by panic, pride, and the terrifying reality of losing his entire social and financial standing, he concocted a reckless plan.
He knew that Kesha’s quadruplets attended a prestigious private academy in the rolling hills of Westlake, just outside Austin.
On Friday afternoon, as the school bell rang and children poured out onto the manicured courtyard toward the pickup lines, Arthur parked a rented sedan down the street. Dressed in a low-profile jacket and sunglasses, he slipped past the peripheral security gates, his eyes frantically searching the crowd of uniformed students.
He spotted them near the fountain.
Leo, Sophie, Maya, and Toby were sitting on a stone bench, accompanied by their private security detail—a tall, imposing man in a suit named Jackson, who was standing a few yards away, talking to the school administrator.
Arthur saw his window. He bypassed the security officer, stepping quickly up to the stone bench.
"Leo! Sophie!" Arthur called out, forcing a wide, frantic smile onto his face as he dropped to one knee in front of the four children.
The quadruplets instantly froze. Toby pulled back, clutching Maya’s arm, while Leo immediately stood up, stepping firmly in front of his sisters.
"Who are you?" Toby asked, though the uncanny resemblance rendered the question unnecessary.
"It's me... it's your dad," Arthur said, his voice trembling with desperate enthusiasm. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out four velvet-wrapped boxes containing expensive gold wristwatches. "Look what I brought you! Christmas presents! I know I missed the holiday, but I wanted to give these to you personally!"
Leo didn't look at the boxes. His eight-year-old face was completely calm, his posture echoing the exact iron composure of his mother.
"You're not our dad," Leo said clearly. "You're Arthur Brooks."
Arthur flinched, his smile faltering. "Leo, buddy... listen to me. Your mother is angry at me, okay? She's telling you things to make you hate me. But I'm your father! I carry you in my blood! Look at your face—you look just like me!"
"We don't hate you," Sophie spoke up, stepping beside her brother, her young voice carrying a cold, mature clarity that chilled Arthur to the bone. "Mom taught us that hatred is a waste of energy. We just don't know you. And we don't want your watches."
"Sophie, please—" Arthur reached out his hand to touch her arm.
"Step back from the children immediately!"
A heavy, iron hand clamped down onto Arthur’s shoulder with terrifying force. Jackson, the lead security officer, yanked Arthur back, spinning him around and throwing him against the stone wall of the courtyard.
Within seconds, two uniformed school resource officers rushed over, their hands resting on their sidearms.
"Get your hands off me!" Arthur screamed, thrashing against Jackson’s grip. "I am their biological father! I have a right to speak to my children!"
"You are trespassing on private school property, Mr. Brooks," Jackson growled into Arthur’s ear, pressing him firmly against the wall. "And you are violating an emergency temporary protective order served on your attorney forty-five minutes ago."
A sleek black SUV pulled up to the curb at that exact moment. The rear door opened, and Kesha stepped out. She didn't run; she walked with slow, deliberate, terrifying majesty across the courtyard.
The school principal, teachers, and dozens of parents gathered around, whispering in shock as they watched the drama unfold.
Kesha walked right up to Arthur, who was pinned against the wall by Jackson. She didn't look angry; she looked at him with the absolute pity one reserves for a broken, pathetic insect.
"You really never learn, do you, Arthur?" Kesha said softly.
Arthur looked past her at the four children standing nearby. "Kesha! Tell them! Tell them I'm their father! You're poisoning their minds against me!"
Leo stepped forward, looking right into Arthur’s eyes.
"Mom didn't poison our minds," Leo said loudly enough for all the gathering parents to hear. "She never spoke ill of you. She spent eight years building a life for us while you pretended we didn't exist. You ran away because you were weak. And you came back because you're greedy."
The crowd of parents gasped. Several mothers covered their mouths, looking at Arthur with absolute disgust.
Arthur stared at his eight-year-old son, the words striking his chest with the force of a battering ram. He realized, in that single horrifying second, that he hadn't just lost a legal battle; he had lost the hearts of four human beings who saw right through his soul.
"Take him away, officers," Kesha commanded quietly.
The school resource officers stepped in, snapping steel handcuffs around Arthur’s wrists as he was marched through the crowded courtyard in front of dozens of Austin’s elite families, screaming excuses into the empty afternoon air until he was shoved into the back of a police cruiser.
Kesha turned back to her four children. She dropped to her knees, opening her arms wide.
All four quadruplets rushed into her embrace, wrapping their small arms tightly around their mother.

"Are you okay, my loves?" Kesha whispered, kissing each of their faces.
"We're perfect, Mom," Leo said, holding her hand tight. "We're always perfect with you."
