Chapter 5 - The Vows of the Underworld

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the Arizona sky in bruised shades of purple and crimson.

Inside the subterranean command center of the Brooks estate, banks of high-definition monitors glowed with live satellite feeds, thermal drone footage, and encrypted wiretap intercepts. The room hummed with the quiet, frantic energy of a military bunker preparing for combat.

Nathan stood before a large digital map of the Phoenix metropolitan area, his tailored jacket discarded, his sleeves rolled up, revealing the lean, muscular frame of a man who had fought his way up from the gutter to rule an empire.

"Vance is predictable," Nathan mapped out with a laser pointer, speaking to a semicircle of grim-faced capos and tactical commanders. "He thinks our strength lies in the downtown casinos and the shipping ports. He’s going to hit our secondary logistics hub off Interstate 10 tonight, expecting light resistance."

"And if he does, Boss?" asked a burly, scarred capo named Tony.

"We let him walk right into the kill box," Nathan replied coldly. "We seal the perimeter, cut off all communications, and leave not a single survivor to carry a message back to Texas."

I stood quietly in the corner of the command room, holding a cup of black coffee. Noah and Lily were safely tucked away in the upper residential wing under the protection of Mrs. Gable and four elite guards, completely unaware of the approaching storm.

Nathan walked over to me, stepping away from his men. His face was carved from stone, but his eyes softened just a fraction when he looked at me.

"You shouldn't be in here, Emily," he said quietly. "It's not a sight for a new bride."

"You think I haven't seen violence, Nathan?" I asked bitterly, looking down at my ring. "My ex-husband used to treat our home like a boxing ring before he threw us out onto the highway. Men like Vance don't scare me. They just make me angry."

Nathan let out a low, humorless chuckle. "You continue to surprise me, Emily Brooks. Most women would be screaming for a divorce lawyer by now."

"Most women didn't marry the Devil to save their children," I retorted smoothly.

Before Nathan could reply, the secure comms console crackled to life with a burst of static.

“Boss! This is Vanguard Lead on I-10. Vance’s convoy just hit the checkpoint. Three armored vans, twelve armed combatants. They’re breaching the east gate!”

Nathan’s expression hardened instantly. He turned back to his men, his voice slicing through the room like a razor.

"Lock down the estate. Release the tactical teams. Nobody enters this property alive without my permission."

He turned back to me one last time, pulling a heavy, suppressed Sig Sauer P226 from his shoulder holster and setting it deliberately on the steel desk in front of me.

"Stay here," Nathan ordered. "If anyone makes it past the courtyard... use it."

Without another word, Nathan turned and walked out of the command room, disappearing into the dark desert night to lead his army into war.
