Chapter 8 - Reign of the Southwest King

One year later.

The grand ballroom of the Brooks estate was filled with the soft strains of a live string quartet, the clinking of crystal champagne flutes, and the joyful laughter of guests.

Tonight was the annual charity gala for the Arizona Children's Foundation—an organization fully funded by the Brooks philanthropic trust, providing medical care and housing for displaced families across the Southwest.

I stood near the grand staircase, wearing a stunning emerald-green silk gown that caught the candlelight with every movement. The diamond necklace around my neck sparkled brilliantly, but it was nothing compared to the fierce, unshakeable confidence in my eyes.

I was no longer the terrified, exhausted mother stranded on a deserted highway.

I was Emily Brooks—queen of the Southwest underworld, co-owner of an empire, and the woman who had tamed the Devil himself.

From across the room, I watched Noah and Lily running through the crowd, laughing as they chased a silver-haired senator’s grandson around the dessert table, looked after by a team of discreet guards who treated them like royalty.

"You look breathtaking tonight, Mrs. Brooks," a deep, familiar voice murmured near my ear.

I turned to find Nathan standing beside me. He wore a flawless tuxedo, his silver-gray eyes gleaming with unabashed adoration as he looked down at me.

"You don't look so bad yourself, Mr. Brooks," I smiled, slipping my hand into the crook of his arm.

Nathan chuckled, pressing a soft kiss to my temple before raising his champagne flute to toast the room.

Across the ballroom, powerful men—politicians, billionaires, syndicate bosses from Chicago and New York who had flown in just to pay their respects—raised their glasses in unison toward us. They looked at Nathan with awe, and at me with absolute, reverent respect.

They all knew the legend of the Devil of the Southwest.

They just didn't know that the monster had finally found a heart—and that his queen was the one holding the crown.

Nathan leaned down, whispering softly against my ear as the music swelled around us.

"Happy anniversary, Emily."

"Happy anniversary, Nathan," I replied, leaning into his side.

We had started our journey on a lonely, broken stretch of highway where life was supposed to have ended. Instead, it was where our true reign began.
