Chapter 6 - The Confrontation in the Study

“Hide in the walk-in closet,” Claire hissed, pushing Maya toward the recessed alcove behind the bookshelf.

“What about you?” Maya signed frantically.

“I’ll handle him,” Claire whispered, her jaw set with grim resolve.

Before Maya could protest, Claire stepped out of the bedroom into the dimly lit hallway just as Graham Holloway reached the top of the stairs.

The billionaire stopped dead in his tracks. His dark eyes widened in genuine shock as he stared at the freelance interpreter standing in his private residential wing at three o'clock in the morning.

“You,” Graham breathed, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. “How the hell did you get in here?”

“Your security system has blind spots, Mr. Holloway, just like your parenting,” Claire said steadily, standing her ground in the center of the hallway.

Graham’s face twisted into a mask of cold fury. He didn't yell; he pulled a slim smartphone from his pocket, his thumb hovering over the speed dial for security. “You’re trespassing on private federal property. I’ll have you arrested and put away so fast your agency won't even remember your name.”

“Go ahead,” Claire challenged, taking a step toward him. “Call security. Call the police. Let’s see what the press says when they find out the great Graham Holloway had to lock his deaf daughter in the west wing to force a fraudulent guardianship past her mother’s trust.”

Graham’s thumb froze over the screen. The color drained from his face for the second time in forty-eight hours.

“What are you talking about?” he demanded, though his voice lacked its earlier absolute certainty.

“You think Julian Vance is your loyal partner?” Claire pressed, her voice sharp and unyielding. “He’s not trying to protect your family legacy, Mr. Holloway. He’s liquidating it. He drafted a fake incapacity clause to strip Maya of her voting rights so he can push through the merger with the conglomerate that will bankrupt Holloway Technologies within six months. He’s using you as a blunt instrument to destroy your own daughter’s future.”

Graham stared at her, his mind—trained to analyze multi-billion-dollar corporate acquisitions and complex global markets—suddenly colliding with a terrifying possibility.

“That’s a lie,” Graham muttered, though his hand lowered slightly. “Julian has been my most trusted advisor for fifteen years.”

“Ask him for the original trust document from Rebecca Holloway,” Claire said calmly. “Ask him why the execution date was modified on the digital server last Tuesday. Or better yet... ask Maya.”

The bedroom door behind Claire swung open.

Maya stepped out into the hallway. She wasn't hiding anymore. Her shoulders were back, her chin was high, and her hands moved with a cold, devastating precision that needed no translation, though Claire voiced every word aloud for the billionaire to hear.

“You were so busy building an empire that you let a snake into our house, Dad,” Maya signed, her eyes locked onto her father with a mixture of heartbreak and fierce power. “He didn't want to protect us. He wanted to silence me so he could steal everything Mom left behind. And you let him do it because it was easier than listening to me.”

Graham stood frozen in the dim hallway. The multi-billion-dollar titan of industry looked suddenly small, weathered, and utterly broken as the pillars of his life collapsed around him.

“Maya...” Graham whispered, taking a hesitant step forward, reaching out a hand. “I... I didn't know.”

“I know you didn't,” Maya signed, her hands slowing down, the anger fading into a quiet, profound exhaustion. “That’s why you failed as a father. But you have one chance to fix it before tomorrow morning.”
