Chapter 6 - The Traitor Within

The revelations in the safe room changed the battlefield entirely.

Matteo Varric was not just dealing with a standard territorial war against a rival mafia syndicate; he was dealing with an infiltration that had poisoned his estate from the inside out, linking the theft of Liana’s child directly to the threat against his own son.

“Callahan!” Matteo barked into the secure comms unit on the wall.

“Boss? I’m here,” the intelligence chief’s voice crackled back.

“Run a secondary audit on all payroll transactions originating from the Vane Foundation accounts over the last twelve months. Cross-reference every name with our current domestic and security staff.”

“Already on it, boss,” Callahan replied, his voice tense. “It’ll take about twenty minutes to crunch the encrypted ledgers.”

“Make it ten.”

Matteo clicked off. He turned back to Liana, who was sitting quietly on the cot, wiping the remaining tears from her face. The defensive wall she had built around her heart was cracked open, exposing a depth of pain that matched his own terror as a father.

“You think my estate is laundering money for the Moretti family?” Matteo asked, his voice low and dangerous.

“Not your estate,” Liana corrected him. “Someone who manages your administrative ledger. Someone who has access to the private accounts, the hiring files, and the security schedules.”

Matteo’s mind raced through his inner circle. Mrs. Gable, the elderly head housekeeper who had served his family for thirty years? No, she was loyal to a fault. Marcus? He had taken bullets for Matteo in Sicily; his loyalty was forged in blood. Dominic? Like a brother.

That left only one person who had recently been promoted to oversee estate finances and staff deployment.

Arthur Vance.

Matteo’s jaw tightened. Arthur had been with him for five years, recommended by a high-ranking political donor in Albany. He was quiet, efficient, always blending into the background.

And Arthur was the one who had processed Liana’s employment application two days ago.

“Marcus!” Matteo shouted toward the safe room door.

The heavy steel door swung open instantly, and Marcus stepped inside, his weapon holstered but his hand resting close to his side. “Boss?”

“Find Arthur Vance. Bring him to the study. Do not let him touch a phone, a tablet, or a panic button.”

Marcus’s eyes narrowed. He didn't ask questions. “Consider it done.”
