Chapter 7 - The Trap Sprung

Ten minutes later, the amber-lit study on the third floor of the mansion was locked down tight.

Arthur Vance stood near the mahogany desk, looking remarkably calm for a man who had just been escorted at gunpoint by two armed enforcers. He wore a crisp tweed vest, his gold-rimmed glasses catching the lamplight.

“Mr. Varric, I must protest,” Arthur said smoothly, adjusting his cuffs. “Having your men drag me out of my quarters in the middle of the night is entirely unprofessional. We have an operational crisis with the sniper attack, and I should be coordinating with local law enforcement—”

“Save it, Arthur,” Matteo interrupted, walking slowly around his desk.

Liana stood quietly near the shadows by the bookshelf, watching Arthur with sharp, calculating intensity.

Matteo slammed a thick stack of printed financial logs onto the desk.

“Three million dollars,” Matteo said coldly. “That’s how much has been funneled from my contingency accounts into offshore shell companies tied to the Vane Foundation over the last two years. And every single transfer was authorized using your administrative override code, Arthur.”

Arthur didn't panic. He didn't stutter. Instead, a slow, chilling smile spread across his thin lips.

“You always were thorough, Matteo,” Arthur said, dropping the polite servant persona entirely. His voice lost its deferential tone, becoming crisp, arrogant, and cold. “I suppose it was only a matter of time before you noticed the discrepancy.”

Marcus stepped forward, drawing his pistol and pressing the barrel against Arthur’s shoulder. “You’re dead, you son of a bitch.”

“Am I?” Arthur chuckled softly, raising his hands in mock surrender. He didn't look at Marcus; he looked directly at Matteo. “If you pull that trigger, Mr. Varric, you’ll never find out where your son’s real mother is.”

The room went absolute dead silence.

Matteo froze halfway across the room. “What did you say?”

“You think your wife died of natural complications during childbirth seven months ago?” Arthur laughed, shaking his head. “How naive can a mafia boss be? She discovered that the Moretti family was using our estate's transport lines for human trafficking—specifically, infant acquisition. She tried to expose us. So we staged an accident.”

Liana gasped, clapping a hand over her mouth.

Matteo’s face turned a terrifying, deathly shade of white. The veins in his neck bulged against his collar. The air left his lungs in a ragged rush.

“You...” Matteo whispered, his voice shaking with a rage so profound it defied human bounds. “You killed Elena?”

“We eliminated a liability,” Arthur corrected coolly. “And when your son started showing genetic anomalies that interfered with our network’s operations, we tried to take him too. But the maid—sweet little Liana here—ruined our timeline by walking in with her grief and her maternal instincts.”

Arthur’s hand dipped casually toward his vest pocket.

“And now,” Arthur smiled, pulling out a small red detonator button, “we finish what we started.”
