Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

The victory in court brought temporary safety, but peace remained elusive.
Over the next month, strange things began happening. Unmarked sedans parked down the street from my apartment building at night. My employer received anonymous tips alleging financial embezzlement on my part, forcing HR to launch an audit that temporarily suspended my paycheck.
Evelyn was using her vast wealth and connections to choke me out financially and psychologically.
Despite the pressure, my focus remained entirely on Lily. With the help of a child psychologist named Dr. Aris, Lily began the long, slow process of healing. She learned that she was safe, that winter clothes were meant for snowmen and sledding, not punishment, and that warmth was a promise her father would never break.
One rainy Tuesday evening, while Lily was doing her homework at the kitchen table, my phone rang. The caller ID showed an unknown number.
I answered carefully. "Hello?"
"Mark... please don't hang up."
It was Taylor. Her voice sounded fragile, stripped of the anger and defiance she had shown in court.
"Taylor? What do you want?" I asked, walking into the hallway out of Lily's earshot.
"I need to see you," she sobbed softly. "Without my mother knowing. Please, Mark. I can't live like this anymore."
I was suspicious, knowing Evelyn’s capacity for traps. "Why should I trust you? You lied under oath. You defended her."
"Because I found something," Taylor said, her breath hitching. "I went through the attic at my mother's estate while she was out of town. I found... I found the journals, Mark. And the old home videos."
My heart hammered against my ribs. "What journals?"
"My mother kept meticulous records of her 'discipline programs' for me when I was growing up," Taylor confessed, her voice breaking completely into weeping. "And... and she kept notes on Lily too. She wrote down dates, times, temperatures... Mark, she’s sick. She’s been doing this for decades. I was so terrified of her my whole life that I forced myself to believe it was normal. But looking at those books... seeing what she planned for Lily..."

"Where are you now?" I demanded.
"I'm at a coffee shop off Highway 24," she whispered. "Bring your lawyer if you have to. Just please... help me get away from her."
