Chapter 8 - Sunbeams in Colorado

Six months later, summer had arrived in the Colorado mountains. The harsh, biting cold of winter was replaced by warm golden sunshine, blooming wildflowers, and clear blue skies.

The court permanently granted me full legal and physical custody of Lily. Taylor, acknowledging her need to heal and rebuild her life away from her mother’s shadow, entered intensive therapy and signed over custody willingly. We established a supervised visitation agreement, allowing her to slowly rebuild a healthy, safe relationship with Lily step by step.

My financial life stabilized as well. With Evelyn’s interference gone, I received a promotion at my engineering firm, allowing us to buy a cozy wood-frame house nestled at the foot of the mountains—a house with plenty of windows, bright sunlight, and no dark garages.

One Saturday afternoon, Lily and I sat on the back deck of our new home. The air was warm, carrying the sweet scent of pine and fresh grass.

Lily was busy drawing with brightly colored chalk on the wooden patio boards. She was drawing a massive yellow sun with long rays stretching across the floor.

"Daddy, look!" she called out, pointing to her artwork with a brilliant, happy smile.

I walked over and knelt beside her, wrapping my arm around her shoulders. She felt warm—so wonderfully, vibrant, and alive.

"That's the brightest sun I've ever seen, Lily bug," I said softly.

She leaned her head against my arm, looking up at the sky. "It’s never going to be cold again, right Daddy?"

I kissed the top of her head, holding her tight against me, feeling the strength of her heartbeat and the safety of our new life.

"Never again, sweetheart," I promised, as the afternoon sun washed over us both. "From now on, it’s only warmth."
