Chapter 7 - The Public Smear

By noon, my phone began vibrating continuously on the counter.

Text messages, voicemail notifications, and missed calls were flooding in from extended family members—aunts, uncles, cousins, and old family friends I hadn't spoken to in years.

My mother had spent the entire morning on Facebook and group messaging chats, launching a desperate, scorched-earth smear campaign.

“Please pray for our family,” she had posted alongside an old photo of Arthur smiling at a summer barbecue. “Our eldest daughter Evelyn suffered a severe mental breakdown after her divorce. Last night, she fabricated terrible lies, called the police on her own father, and threw us out onto the street in the middle of the night without our medication or clothes. We are currently staying in a motel with nothing. Please help us stand against this cruelty.”

My cousin Sarah sent me a six-paragraph text message calling me an ungrateful monster, demanding that I drop the charges immediately and let my parents return home.

I didn't argue. I didn't type out a furious reply.

Instead, I sat down at my laptop, opened my email, and attached four files:

The high-definition audio and video recording from my front hallway camera, showing my father screaming, demanding $2,000 for Paige’s debt, and striking me across the face while Ruby screamed in terror.

The certified copy of the county land deed showing my sole ownership of the home.

The forensic accounting report detailing the $65,000 stolen through identity theft.

The official police booking mugshot of Arthur Hayes.

I uploaded the entire package into a single public Google Drive link and posted it directly under my mother’s Facebook status with a simple caption:

“Here is the truth. The court date is set for the 15th.”

Within twenty minutes, the internet did what it does best.

My mother’s post went viral across our hometown network. The comments section beneath her tearful plea exploded into thousands of outrage-filled responses. Family members who had sent me hateful texts deleted them instantly, replacing them with private apologies and messages of horrifed support.

By three o'clock, Eleanor deleted her Facebook account entirely.
