Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Two weeks later, the final dominoes fell with terrifying speed.

Faced with overwhelming paper trails, bank surveillance footage, and Paige’s sworn testimony to prosecutors, Eleanor signed a comprehensive plea agreement to avoid a grand jury trial.

She pleaded guilty to two counts of grand larceny and one count of felony identity fraud. Under the terms of the deal, she was sentenced to three years of formal probation, five hundred hours of community service, and was ordered to pay $95,000 in full financial restitution to Ruby’s medical trust and my credit accounts.

To cover the restitution, the court ordered the immediate seizure and liquidation of Arthur’s pension account and the sale of their remaining vehicles.

Paige lost her luxury apartment, her sports car was auctioned off by the bank, and she was sentenced to two years of deferred probation with a mandatory financial literacy program. She was forced to take a minimum-wage job at a local diner to pay off her remaining court fees, moving into a tiny studio apartment miles outside the city.

One night, three months after the incident, my Ring doorbell chimed at 10:00 PM.

I opened the app on my phone.

Paige stood on the front porch in the rain, holding a cheap plastic umbrella, her eyes swollen and red. She looked through the camera lens, her voice trembling over the tiny speaker.

“Evie... please,” she sobbed. “Mom and Dad won't speak to me because I took the plea deal. I have nowhere else to go. I can’t pay my rent this month. Please... just let me sleep on the couch for a few days.”

I sat on the couch in my warm, quiet living room, watching her on the screen.

I remembered the taste of blood in my mouth. I remembered her tapping her acrylic nails, telling me to stop acting like a victim while my daughter cried in the hallway.

I pressed the microphone button on my phone.

“The motel down the street is taking applications for night shift cleaners,” I said softly. “They pay hourly. You should try there.”

I turned off the speaker, closed the app, and set my phone face down on the table.
