Chapter 6 - The Arraignment Hearing

The municipal courtroom was packed to maximum capacity.
Dozens of local reporters sat in the gallery, their notebooks ready, cameras focused on the defense table. The story of a decorated intelligence officer returning from deployment to save his mother from an elaborate, poisoned conservatorship plot had captured national headlines.
I sat in the front row of the gallery directly behind the prosecution table. Mom sat beside me, dressed impeccably, holding her head high.
A door on the side of the courtroom opened, and three guards led the defendants inside.
Rachel, Cole, and Dr. Sterling walked in, dressed in bright orange county jail jumpsuits, their wrists bound by iron handcuffs attached to heavy waist chains.
Rachel looked unrecognizable. Her manicured nails were chipped, her hair unwashed and tied in a messy knot, her face pale and sunken. When her eyes caught mine in the audience, a flash of desperate, pathetic panic crossed her face, followed immediately by shame. She quickly cast her eyes down to the floor.
Cole walked with a limp, his head bowed, looking utterly broken. Dr. Sterling looked stripped of his arrogant dignity, his silver hair unkempt as he slouched between his court-appointed defense attorneys.
"All rise!" the bailiff shouted as Superior Court Judge Marcus Vance took his seat at the high wooden bench.
"Case number 24-CR-9012," Judge Vance announced, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "State versus Rachel Mercer, Cole Vance, and Dr. Kenneth Sterling. Charges: Attempted Murder in the Second Degree by Drugging, Grand Larceny, Conspiracy to Commit Elder Abuse, Forgery, and Medical Malpractice."
The district attorney, Sarah Jenkins, stood up. "The State is ready, Your Honor. Given the mountain of digital, physical, and forensic evidence, including intercepted dark web chemical purchases and live surveillance video, we move for immediate denial of bail for all three defendants."
Rachel’s defense attorney stood up hastily. "Your Honor, my client is a first-time offender! She is a respected member of the community—"
"Quiet, counselor," Judge Vance snapped, holding up a thick stack of evidence folders. "I have personally reviewed the video recordings captured by Captain Mercer. I have reviewed the medical toxicology reports showing lethal doses of scopolamine in Evelyn Mercer’s blood system."
Judge Vance looked over his glasses at Rachel, his face contorted in absolute revulsion.
"Mrs. Mercer," Judge Vance said, his voice dropping an octave into a cold, stern roar. "Your actions were not a lapse in judgment. They were a systematic, calculated, and monstrous campaign of torture against an innocent elderly woman who opened her home to you."
Rachel burst into hysterical sobs, her shoulders shaking violently as she pressed her chained hands against her face.
"Bail is denied for all three defendants," Judge Vance slammed his gavel down with a sharp, terrifying crack. "You will remain in state custody pending trial."
As the guards grabbed Rachel’s arms to lead her back to the holding cell, she turned toward the gallery, weeping hysterically, screaming across the courtroom.

"Danny! Please! Forgive me! I love you! Don't leave me in here!"
I didn't say a word. I didn't flinch. I sat calmly beside my mother, watching my wife dragged through the heavy steel doors, until the echo of her screams faded completely into the cold marble walls of the courthouse.
