Chapter 8 - The Final Judgments

Eight months later.

The final sentencing hearing at the State Federal Courthouse was brief, brutal, and absolute.

The three defendants had spent the last eight months in county custody, watching their legal defenses disintegrate under the weight of flawless digital evidence. One by one, they had been forced to enter guilty pleas to avoid life sentences.

I sat in the front row beside Mom as Judge Marcus Vance delivered the final sentences from the bench.

"Dr. Kenneth Sterling," Judge Vance declared. "For medical malpractice, conspiracy, and accepting bribes to execute illegal psychiatric holds: your medical license is permanently revoked. You are sentenced to eighteen years in state custody."

Dr. Sterling bowed his head, crying quietly as guards handcuffed him.

"Cole Vance," Judge Vance continued. "For wire fraud, dark-web chemical acquisition, and grand larceny: you are sentenced to twenty-two years in state custody without eligibility for early parole."

Cole stared blankly at the floor, his face empty of all hope.

Finally, Judge Vance turned his eyes onto Rachel.

She wore a gray jumpsuit, her hair cropped short, looking ten years older than her thirty-one years. She was trembling uncontrollably.

"Rachel Mercer," Judge Vance said, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "You abused the sanctity of marriage, exploited the trust of a deployed soldier, and subjected an innocent woman to systemic poisoning and physical torture for financial greed."

Gavel strike.

"I sentence you to thirty-five years in the Women's Maximum Security Facility at Bedford Hills. Restitution in the amount of four hundred thousand dollars will be satisfied immediately through the seizure of all your remaining personal assets."

Gavel slam.

Rachel let out a horrified, blood-curdling shriek as guards grabbed her shoulders, yanked her up, and marched her away through the side exit. She didn't look back at me this time. She knew it was over.

As the courtroom cleared, Sarah Jenkins walked over to us, holding out a final blue legal document.

"Your divorce decree has been officially signed and finalized by the judge, Daniel," Sarah said, handing me the paper. "You are officially a free man."

I took the document, looked at my name written cleanly at the top, and felt the final lingering weight of the past year dissolve into nothingness.

"Thank you, Sarah," I said, shaking her hand.

Mom stood up beside me, taking my arm in hers. "Come on, son. Let's go home."
