Chapter 3 - The Golden Chain

The glare of emergency strobe lights bathed the exterior of the estate in crimson and blue. Three tactical vans, four police cruisers, and two advanced life support ambulances lined the long driveway.

As the paramedics wheeled my stretcher across the manicured front lawn toward the open ambulance doors, I saw the dinner guests being escorted out in handcuffs for questioning. Among them stood Marcus’s mother, Eleanor.

She was still dressed in her fine silk gown, her grey hair styled impeccably. But her face was deathly pale as a female officer held her arms behind her back. Hanging around her throat was the heavy gold chain—and on it, glistening under the flashing red police lights, was the iron key to the cage.

“Officer, this is a terrible misunderstanding!” Eleanor squawked, trying to maintain her aristocratic posture. “I am a respectable member of the country club! My son is a philanthropist! That girl is sick—she has pregnancy psychosis!”

Clara stepped up directly in front of Eleanor. Before Eleanor could pull away, Clara reached out, grabbed the gold chain, and snapped it off her neck with a single brutal yank.

“This is physical evidence of torture and unlawful imprisonment,” Clara declared, holding the key in front of Eleanor’s eyes. “We have your voice recorded on three separate occasions discussing how long it would take my sister to starve to death.”

Eleanor’s eyes went wide. The sophisticated facade completely cracked, revealing the hollow, terrified coward beneath. “You… you couldn’t have…”

“I have every second on tape, Eleanor,” I rasped from the gurney, my voice weak but carrying the weight of pure retribution. “You gave me dirty water. You spat on me. And now, you’re going to die in a concrete cell.”

Eleanor opened her mouth to scream, but the female officer shoved her forcibly into the back of a police cruiser, slamming the door shut.

“Vitals are dropping!” the lead paramedic called out as they rolled my gurney into the back of the ambulance. “Fetal heart rate is decelerating! We need to move NOW!”

The ambulance doors slammed shut, the siren shrieked to life, and the vehicle tore down the driveway, leaving the nightmare of Marcus’s house behind in the dust.
