Chapter 5 - Unearthing the Truth

Two days later, the hospital room was transformed into an improvised headquarters for the District Attorney’s office.
Senior Prosecutor David Vance (no relation to Marcus) sat at the edge of my bed alongside Lead Detective Marcus Miller. On the tray table sat the plastic-wrapped phone I had retrieved from beneath the cage floorboard, along with a secure tablet.
“Mrs. Lin,” Prosecutor Vance began, his voice deep and respectful. “I want to assure you that Marcus Vance and Eleanor Vance are currently being held at the County Maximum Security Facility. Bail has not been set.”
“What are the charges?” I asked, nursing Maya in my arms.
Detective Miller opened a thick leather file. “Currently: Attempted First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Kidnapping, Felony Elder and Domestic Abuse, False Imprisonment, and Child Endangerment. But that’s only the beginning.”
“What do you mean?” Clara asked from the chair beside me.
“When our forensic team searched Marcus’s home office upstairs,” Detective Miller explained, “they seized three encrypted hard drives. It turns out your husband wasn’t just abusing you. He was running a massive Ponzi scheme through his investment firm, embezzling over twelve million dollars from clients.”
I gasped softly. “Twelve million?”
“And that’s why he locked you in that basement,” Prosecutor Vance added. “Three months ago, when you threatened to audit the family accounts after noticing missing trust fund money, he realized you were about to discover his financial fraud. If you exposed him, he faced life in prison. So he made you ‘disappear’ while keeping you alive just long enough to try and force you to sign over your family’s land inheritance to clear his debts.”
The puzzle pieces fell into place with sickening clarity. Marcus had never just been a cruel husband; he was a desperate predator backed against a wall.
“The audio files from your hidden phone are gold-standard evidence,” Prosecutor Vance continued, tapping the tablet. “We have thirty-four distinct recordings. We have him threatening your life, we have the sound of him withholding food, and we have his mother explicitly discussing disposing of your body after the birth.”

I looked at the prosecutor with unwavering determination. “I want them to spend the rest of their lives behind bars. I want to testify.”
“You will, Sarah,” Vance promised. “And when you do, we are going to bury them.”
