Chapter 5 - Breaking the Siege

At 1:15 PM, Arthur Pendelton—a pale, balding man in his late fifties with nervous eyes and a wrinkled suit—walked out of his Main Street office carrying a leather briefcase.
He unlocked his sedan, set the briefcase on the passenger seat, and got into the car. But before he could insert the key into the ignition, the rear door opened, and Marcus Vance slid into the back seat. Simultaneously, Marian open the front passenger door and sat down, shutting it firmly.
"What—what is the meaning of this?!" Pendelton squeaked, clutching his chest as his face drained of color. "Get out of my car, or I’ll call the police!"
"I wouldn't advise that, Arthur," Marian said calmly, pulling her laptop from her bag and opening a file. "Unless you want Sheriff Miller to join you in a federal prison."
Marian pressed play.
Through the car’s speakers, the crystal-clear recording of Preston Vale played: "...The notary is Arthur Pendelton. He doesn't ask questions; he counts his five percent commission and stamps where I tell him to stamp..."
Pendelton’s jaw dropped. Sweat began to bead heavily along his hairline. "That... that’s an illegal wiretap! That’s inadmissible!"
"In a state trial? Perhaps," Marian said, her tone razor-sharp. "In a Federal grand jury investigation into wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and interstate money laundering? It’s more than enough to secure an emergency freeze on every offshore account linked to your firm. We pulled your Cayman transfers forty minutes ago, Arthur. You’re looking at twenty-five years without parole."
Pendelton began to shake violently. "I didn't know about any murder! I swear to God! Preston told me it was just a civil tax dispute! He said Olivia was consenting to the asset consolidation!"
"She is currently locked in an unheated concrete room under the garage, being starved until her organs fail," Marian said, leaning closer to him, her eyes burning with terrifying intensity. "If my daughter dies, Arthur, I will personally ensure that you are indicted as a co-principal in capital murder. Do you understand me?"
"What do you want?!" Pendelton cried, tears of panic brimming in his eyes. "What do you want me to do?!"
"You’re going to keep your two o'clock appointment," Marian instructed coldly. "You’re going to walk into that house with your briefcase. But inside your briefcase, there will be a live audio and video transmitter connected directly to the FBI regional tactical command center."
At 1:55 PM, Arthur Pendelton’s silver Buick pulled up the gravel driveway of the Blackwood Lane estate.
Inside the main house, Preston Vale was waiting in the study, wearing a dark blue suit, looking every bit the triumphant corporate prince. Vanessa stood by the bar, pouring two glasses of scotch.
"Arthur," Preston said smoothly, extending a hand as the trembling lawyer entered the study. "You look pale. The mountain air not agreeing with you?"
"I’m... I’m fine, Preston," Pendelton stammered, setting his leather briefcase down on the heavy mahogany desk. "Let’s... let’s just get this paperwork finalized. Where is Olivia? Federal regulations require the signee to be present in person for deeds exceeding ten million dollars."
Preston’s smile narrowed slightly. "She’s upstairs, resting. She’s signed the documents already. You just need to witness the signature and apply the seal."
"I... I can't do that, Preston," Pendelton blurted out, his voice cracking under the extreme pressure. "I have to see her sign it. If the SEC audits this—"
Preston’s demeanor changed instantly. The warm host vanished, replaced by a cold, predatory monster. He walked over to the desk, stepped right into Pendelton’s personal space, and leaned down.
"Listen to me, you pathetic old hack," Preston hissed, his voice low and deadly. "You took three hundred thousand dollars. You do your job, stamp the paper, and get out of my house. She isn't coming upstairs. She’s locked under four inches of reinforced steel in the subterranean workshop, and she isn't coming out until I have the verified wire confirmation from Zurich."
Got you, Marian whispered from inside the tactical command van parked four hundred yards away in the woods.

Through her headset, the entire FBI field team and Marcus’s tactical operatives heard the confession in high-definition clarity.
"Teams 1 and 2, move in!" the FBI tactical leader shouted into his radio. "Target is armed and dangerous! Secure the primary residence and locate the victim!"
