Chapter 7 - The Prosecutor's Counter-Trap

Ten minutes later, the estate’s driveway was illuminated by a sea of red and blue emergency lights.
Federal agents had cleared the house. Vanessa Vale was led out in handcuffs, sobbing pathetically in her ruined silk dress, while federal officers seized her bags containing stolen jewelry and Olivia's personal documents.
Sheriff Miller’s patrol car pulled into the driveway, its lights flashing. Miller stepped out, looking furious and panicked as he saw federal agents swarming the property he was paid to protect.
"What in the hell is going on here?!" Miller yelled, marching toward the FBI tactical unit. "This is my jurisdiction! You have no authority to execute a raid in Ashford County without my—"
"Sheriff J. Miller?" an FBI Special Agent in Charge stepped forward, pulling a blue folder from his jacket. "You are under arrest for federal obstruction of justice, misprision of a felony, and conspiracy to commit extortion."
Miller’s face turned white. "You can't arrest me! I'm the elected Sheriff!"
"Read him his rights," the agent commanded coldly as two federal officers pulled Miller’s arms behind his back and slapped heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists.
On the rear patio, paramedics were attending to Olivia, wrapping her in thermal blankets and administering IV fluids before placing her on a stretcher. Marian stood right beside her, holding her hand tightly, refusing to let go for even a single second.
Preston Vale was brought out on a gurney, his shoulder bandaged, flanked by two armed federal marshals. As his gurney passed Marian, he stopped cursing at the paramedics and looked up at her, his dark eyes filled with pure, unadulterated hatred.
"You think you won, Marian?" Preston spat, his voice trembling with bitter malice. "My high-priced defense lawyers will shred your wiretaps in court. They'll call it illegal surveillance. I'll be out on bail by tomorrow afternoon, and I’ll take every last dime of your daughter's estate in the divorce."
Marian slowly let go of Olivia’s hand and walked over to the side of Preston’s gurney.
She leaned down until her face was inches from his. The trembling mother was gone; in her place stood the legendary chief prosecutor who had put the most dangerous men in the state behind bars for life.
"You don't understand, Preston," Marian said, her voice drop-dead quiet and utterly devoid of fear. "I didn't just wiretap your house. Before I called the FBI, I filed an emergency petition in the North Carolina Supreme Court under the Victims' Protection and Asset Forfeiture Act. Every account associated with Piedmont Logistics, Ascension Ventures, and your personal trusts was frozen thirty minutes ago."
Preston’s breath hitched in his throat.
"Furthermore," Marian continued, her eyes locked onto his with absolute lethal precision, "Arthur Pendelton has already executed a full state's evidence plea agreement. He’s testifying against you on the capital murder conspiracy charges. You aren't going to a comfortable country-club prison, Preston. You are going to a maximum-security state penitentiary for the next thirty years. And you won't have a single dollar left to pay for your coffee in the commissary."
Preston stared at her, his lips parting in horror as the full reality of his complete, irreversible downfall hit him like an avalanche. For the first time in his life, the arrogant con man had nothing left to say.

"Take him away," Marian ordered the marshals.
They wheeled him into the back of the armored transport van, slamming the doors shut, sealing him away in the dark he had prepared for another.
