Chapter 5 - The Trap on Halsted

Connor moved with the terrifying speed of a predator whose den had been invaded.
He gently laid Mara back against the pillows, grabbed his Sig Sauer pistol from the nightstand, and checked the chamber with a crisp, mechanical rack.
"Stay in this room," he commanded, his voice like iron. "Lock the door behind me. Do not open it unless you hear my voice saying your real name."
Before she could protest, he was out the door, sprinting down the grand staircase toward the sub-basement.
The security monitors in the ground-floor hallway flickered and died one by one as a local EMP or network jammer took effect. The estate’s perimeter had been breached. At least half a dozen armed operatives wearing unmarked tactical gear were moving through the ground-floor corridors, systematically neutralizing the internal guards.
They weren't random thugs. They moved with military precision—stacking up against doorways, clearing corners with flashbangs, communicating through encrypted throat-mics.
They were Brennan’s cleanup crew. The men he had trained, funded, and deployed outside the syndicate's normal command structure.
Connor slipped into the shadows of the west wing gallery, his pistol raised.
Two operatives rounded the corner ahead of him, weapons leveled. Connor didn't hesitate. Two muffled cracks from his silenced pistol echoed down the hallway, and both men dropped instantly, neutralizing the threat before they could even squeeze their triggers.
He stepped over their bodies, his mind racing. If Brennan had a secondary team waiting outside to hit the estate, it meant Brennan had anticipated being caught. He had a dead-man’s switch active—somewhere out there, an encrypted file or a secondary commander was ready to execute the final phase of the plan: locate Lena, eliminate her permanently, and burn the Astor Street house to the ground.
Connor reached the sub-basement door.
The heavy steel vault had been blown open from the inside using a shaped thermite charge. Inside, the room was empty. The chair where Brennan had been tied was overturned, its industrial zip-ties sliced clean with a ceramic blade.
On the concrete floor, written in black grease pen, was a single message:
SHE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO REMEMBER. SEE YOU AT THE DOCKS, CON.
Connor stared at the writing. Pier 49. The old import warehouse where he and Brennan had run their first smuggling operations twenty years ago.
He keyed his radio headset. "Rafe. Status."
Static hissed for three seconds before Rafe's voice came through, broken and strained. "Boss... we’ve been hit from the outside. Three of our men down at the gate. Brennan's crew had insider codes. They... they took a vehicle."
"Did they take anyone else?" Connor asked, his heart dropping into his stomach.
May you like
"Negative, boss. The house is secure inside. But... Boss, they’re heading south toward the river."
Connor didn't wait to hear more. He turned and sprinted back up the stairs, knowing with absolute certainty that the trap hadn't been sprung on him in the basement—it was waiting for him at the place where his empire had begun.
