Chapter 8 - Spring on the Lake

Six months later.

The harsh Chicago winter had melted away, replaced by the brilliant, vibrant green of a late-spring afternoon along the Gold Coast.

The courtyard of the Astor Street estate was filled with the soft scent of blooming lilacs and the bright, gurgling sound of a newly installed water fountain.

On a shaded patio chair overlooking the lake, Lena Ashby sat wearing a light linen sundress, her dark hair catching the sunlight. Resting peacefully against her chest in a soft cotton carrier was a healthy, sleeping newborn baby girl with a full head of dark hair and Connor’s stubborn chin.

Connor walked out from the French doors carrying two glasses of iced lemonade. He handed one to Lena, leaned down to press a tender kiss to the top of the baby's head, and then sat down in the chair beside her.

"She’s sleeping," Connor murmured, smiling down at his daughter.

"For now," Lena laughed softly, her green eyes sparkling with the joy of a life fully reclaimed. "Give her twenty minutes and she’ll be running the entire syndicate."

Connor chuckled, taking her hand and intertwining his fingers with hers. The old scar on her wrist from the facility's brand was still there, faded to a silver line, but it was no longer a mark of captivity. It was simply part of the armor they had both survived.

Across the courtyard, the lake stretched out to the horizon—endless, bright, and completely calm.

The ghosts of the past were buried. The war was won. And for the first time in seven months, Connor Ashby knew the difference between simply breathing and being truly alive.
