Chapter 6 - The Billionaire at the Doorstep

"Touch that child, and you will spend the rest of your natural life in a federal penitentiary."
The voice came from the dark hallway behind Vance.
It wasn't shouted. It didn't need to be. It possessed the razor-sharp authority of a man accustomed to commanding armies and controlling billions.
Vance froze, his hand hovering over Maya’s shoulder. He turned around, his brows furrowed in confusion. "Who the hell are you? This is private property!"
A man stepped out of the shadow of the dimly lit hallway.
He was wearing an immaculate charcoal overcoat over a three-piece suit, his polished Italian leather shoes stepping unbothered through the grime of the apartment corridor. Behind him stood four massive men in dark tactical gear, their arms crossed over their chests, their presence filling the hallway like a brick wall.
It was Richard Harrison.
Vance blinked, taking a step back as the raw power radiating from the stranger hit him like a physical force. "Look, mister... I don't know who you are, but this woman owes me—"
Richard didn't even look at Vance. He walked right past him, as if the slumlord were nothing more than a stain on the wall.
He walked straight into the cold, miserable room, stopped three feet from Maya, and slowly dropped to his knees on the dirty floorboards.
The billionaire took off his black leather gloves, tossing them onto the floor.
He looked at Maya’s small, patched jeans, her safety-pinned backpack sitting in the corner, and the white yarn shoelace tied on her boot.
"Hello, Maya," Richard said softly, his voice thick with an emotion he couldn't hide.
Maya’s eyes widened. "The rich mister from the airport?"
Richard let out a soft, wet laugh, tears glistening in his eyes. "Yes, sweetie. The rich mister."
Elena stood frozen against the wall, her mind spinning in complete disbelief. "Who... who are you?"
Richard stood up slowly, turning to Elena with a deep, respectful bow of his head. "Mrs. Miller. My name is Richard Harrison. Three days ago, your daughter saved my son’s life at Logan Airport."
Vance’s jaw dropped. "Harrison? Like... Harrison Global?"
Richard finally turned his head to look at Vance. His eyes were cold, calculating, and utterly terrifying.
"Mateo," Richard called out quietly.
The head of security stepped into the room. "Yes, Mr. Harrison?"
"Who owns this building?"
"A shell company registered under Marcus Vance’s name, sir," Mateo replied, checking a tablet. "It’s currently carrying four hundred thousand dollars in delinquent property taxes."
"Buy it," Richard said simply.
"Sir?" Mateo asked.
"Buy the entire building. Buy the block," Richard ordered, pulling a Montblanc pen from his breast pocket. "Pay off the city taxes, transfer the deed to Mrs. Elena Miller, and have Mr. Vance arrested for criminal endangerment, illegal eviction, and housing code violations before midnight."
Vance turned white as a sheet. "You... you can't buy my building!"
"I just did," Richard said coldly, stepping closer to Vance until he was inches from his sweaty face. "And if you ever come within five hundred yards of this woman or her daughter again, I will personally buy the prison you are sent to."
Vance dropped his baseball bat. It clattered loudly against the floorboards. The two thugs backed out of the room so fast they tripped over each other in the hallway.
"Get out," Mateo barked, grabbing Vance by his collar and dragging him down the stairs like a sack of trash.
The room fell dead silent.
Elena sank against the wall, her hands covering her face as tears of shock poured through her fingers. "I... I don't understand..."
Richard walked over to Elena, taking her hands gently into his own.
"You raised a hero, Mrs. Miller," Richard said softly. "My son Ethan is alive today because your daughter had the courage and skill to do what a dozen adults were too afraid to do."
He turned back to Maya, kneeling down once more so he was at eye level with the seven-year-old girl.
"Ethan is waiting in the car downstairs," Richard smiled, pointing toward the window where the flashing lights of two black SUVs lit up the falling snow. "He brought a shiny toy robot for you. Will you come with us?"
Maya looked at her mother, then down at her purple backpack.
"Can my mom come too?" Maya asked softly. "It’s really cold here."
May you like
Richard smiled—a genuine, warm smile that reached his eyes.
"Your mother is coming with us forever," Richard promised. "Neither of you will ever be cold again."
