Chapter 8 - The Snake in the Suit

The accusation hung in the warm air like a cloud of poison.

Elena stepped back as if she had been struck, her face going bright red. "What? I didn't touch your watch! I’ve never even been in your dressing room!"

"Of course you haven't," Colin smirked, opening his briefcase and pulling out a small black velvet box. "Then perhaps you can explain why I found this hidden inside your daughter’s purple backpack in the mudroom five minutes ago?"

Colin opened the box. Inside lay a breathtaking Patek Philippe watch, encrusted with baguette-cut diamonds, sparkling under the living room chandelier.

Maya stopped playing with the robot. She stood up from the floor, her dark eyes wide with confusion and fear. "I didn't put that in my bag! I don't even know what that is!"

"Maya!" Ethan called out from his chair, his little voice trembling. "Daddy, Maya didn't take it! She’s my friend!"

Richard’s face was an unreadable mask of stone. He looked at the diamond watch in Colin’s hand, then at the trembling seven-year-old girl standing beside his son.

"You found it in her backpack, Colin?" Richard asked, his voice disturbingly calm.

"Yes," Colin claimed triumphantly, stepping forward. "I came to deliver the corporate files, saw the bag sitting unattended, and felt something heavy inside. Richard, these people are grifters! They staged the whole scene at the airport to work their way into your life!"

Elena began to cry, pulling Maya against her legs. "Richard, I swear on my son’s memory, we are not thieves! We didn't ask for any of this!"

"I know," Richard said quietly.

He walked over to Colin, stopped right in front of him, and looked down at the velvet box.

"You’re right about one thing, Colin," Richard said softly. "Someone in this house is a thief."

Colin smiled arrogantly. "I’m glad you finally see sense, Richard. Call the police and have them—"

"I was talking about you," Richard interrupted.

Colin’s smile instantly vanished. "What?"

Richard raised his hand and pressed a button on his smart watch.

Instantly, the giant 85-inch television screen mounted above the fireplace clicked on.

A video feed played in crystal-clear 4K resolution.

It showed the estate’s mudroom ten minutes prior. Colin Dray could be seen sneaking past the umbrella stand, opening Maya’s worn purple backpack, pulling the diamond watch from his own coat pocket, and stuffing it into the front zippered compartment.

The room fell into dead silence, broken only by the crackle of the fireplace.

Colin turned white as chalk. His knees shook so violently he almost dropped the velvet box. "Richard... I... I can explain..."

"Did you really think I wouldn't upgrade the estate’s security system after firing you?" Richard asked, his voice dripping with absolute icy contempt. "Did you really think I wouldn't notice that you’ve been embezzling funds from Ethan’s medical trust for two years?"

Colin backed away toward the door, his eyes darting frantically. "Richard, please! I was desperate! The rival tech firm... Marcus Vance... they paid me to ruin your reputation!"

"Marcus Vance?" Elena gasped.

"Yes," Richard said, looking at Elena. "Vance wasn't just a slumlord. He was a shell asset working for Colin’s syndicate to acquire low-income properties for money laundering. When Maya saved Ethan, Colin knew it was only a matter of time before I investigated her background and uncovered his whole operation."

Richard stepped close to Colin, grabbing the disgraced assistant by the lapels of his expensive coat.

"You tried to frame a seven-year-old girl who saved my child’s life," Richard hissed into his ear. "You are lower than the dirt on her patched jeans."

The front doors swung open, and four uniformed Boston Police officers, accompanied by Mateo, stepped into the hallway with hand cuffs drawn.

"Colin Dray," the lead officer announced. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate fraud, and framing an innocent minor."

As the officers hauled Colin away, screaming and kicking, Richard turned back to the room.
