Chapter 9 - Unraveling and Reconstruction

Over the next few weeks, the legal machinery of the federal justice system ground forward with relentless efficiency.

Paige accepted a plea deal offered by the U.S. Attorney’s office: two years in a federal correctional facility in exchange for testifying against our parents as the primary instigators of the conspiracy and forgery.

My parents tried every trick in the book—attempting to claim diminished capacity, blaming me for "abandoning" the family, and even sending frantic, begging emails claiming they were elderly and misunderstood.

The federal judge wasn't buying any of it.

When the final sentencing was handed down in late November, my father received a four-year sentence for wire fraud, conspiracy, and suborning perjury, while my mother received three years for orchestrating the criminal trespass and illegal acquisition of government security codes.

The great Keane dynasty—built entirely on emotional blackmail, entitlement, and the relentless exploitation of my success—collapsed into dust.

And as the dust settled, my life began to rebuild itself in ways I never could have imagined.

Since my international consulting project had concluded its European phase, my company offered me a permanent leadership position based right out of their Washington, D.C. headquarters. Which meant I wasn't going back to London. Which meant I was staying right here.

And as for my relationship with Reid Langford? What started as a bizarre security breach evolved into something deep, genuine, and unshakeable. We spent our weekends walking along the Potomac, cooking dinners in his meticulously secure kitchen, and talking about everything from childhood memories to classified federal operations over glasses of red wine.

He didn't want anything from me except my presence. He didn't view my success as a community resource; he viewed it as a reflection of the brilliant, resilient woman I had become on my own terms.
