Chapter 10 - A New Horizon

Six months later.

The spring sun washed over the sprawling gardens of a quiet, sunlit estate just outside Charlottesville, Virginia.

The air smelled of blooming dogwoods and damp earth. There were no flashing red strobe lights, no frantic phone calls from screaming relatives, and no heavy tactical boots pacing across the floor.

Just peace.

I stood on the wide wooden veranda, holding a mug of coffee, watching the morning light dance across the rolling green hills.

Footsteps approached from behind, and a pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me back against a warm, solid chest. Reid rested his chin on my shoulder, breathing in the scent of my hair.

“You’re up early,” Reid murmured, kissing the side of my neck.

“Couldn't sleep,” I smiled, leaning back into his embrace. “Just... thinking about how much life can change in half a year.”

Reid turned me around in his arms, his dark eyes filled with warmth and absolute devotion. “Are you happy, Marissa?”

I looked up at him—at the man who had walked into my chaotic, broken world with an assault rifle and a federal badge, and had ended up giving me the one thing my family had spent my entire life stealing from me: safety.

“I’m more than happy, Reid,” I whispered, wrapping my arms around his neck. “I’m free.”

Down in Arlington, the old penthouse had long since been sold to someone else, its classified secrets secured behind impenetrable walls. Paige was serving her time, learning the hard way that the world doesn't bend to fit a silver spoon. My parents were sitting in federal prison cells, contemplating the true cost of their greed.

And I was standing here in the sunlight, surrounded by quiet hills, holding the hand of a man who loved me for who I was, not what I could provide.

We leaned in and kissed—slow, deep, and filled with the quiet promise of tomorrow. The past was buried, the debt was paid, and our new horizon was finally, brilliantly clear.
