Chapter 3 - The Pavilion of Lies

The Rosewood Country Club was decorated in lavish shades of pastel pink and sky blue. Gold-lettered banners hung from the white marble pillars of the grand outdoor pavilion, reading Boy or Girl? The Future Arrives Today!

Over seventy guests—extended family members, Vanessa’s social media followers, local country club elites, and my parents' business associates—were gathered around the champagne fountain.

At 4:45 PM, my mother stood near the microphone at the center of the lawn, wearing a designer floral dress, holding a glass of Prosecco. Vanessa stood beside her, wearing a tight white lace maternity gown, her hair professionally curled, holding a large black balloon stuffed with colored confetti.

My father was near the entrance, holding his iPad, looking annoyed as he repeatedly dialed my number.

"She’s not answering," Richard muttered, walking over to my mother. "Nora has completely turned off her phone. I called the bakery directly, and they said no one placed an order for the lemon raspberry cake."

Evelyn’s face darkened, her glossy lip gloss shining under the late afternoon sun. "Unbelievable. She is doing this out of pure spite. She knows how much effort Vanessa put into this theme. She's sitting in that hospital room, dramatically weeping over a baby that doctors are already taking care of, just to steal the spotlight from her sister."

Vanessa put her hands on her stomach, pouting for a nearby photographer. "It’s so unfair, Mom. I wanted Sadie in the family photos. She would have looked adorable in the red coat sitting next to the balloon arch. Nora is such a selfish mother. She’s probably making up stories about the baby just so Matthew doesn't leave her."

"Don't worry, sweetie," Evelyn patted Vanessa’s arm soothingly. "After today, we’re filing the paperwork. If Nora continues to exhibit this kind of unstable, hysterical behavior, we’ll make sure the family court looks into her competence. We have connections with Judge Harrison."

Suddenly, the smooth jazz music playing through the pavilion speakers was cut short.

The sharp, heavy crunch of gravel echoed from the driveway as two marked police cruisers and an unmarked black sedan pulled directly onto the manicured lawn, stopping right beside the balloon arch.

The chatter among the seventy guests died down instantly. Glasses of champagne froze halfway to people's lips.

The doors of the police cars swung open. Detective Miller, Officer Reyes, and three uniformed city officers stepped out, their high-visibility vests shining brightly under the afternoon sun.

Evelyn immediately set her champagne glass down, putting on her best aristocratic smile, stepping forward gracefully. "Officers! Is there a problem? Did the valet cause an issue on the road?"

Detective Miller did not smile. She pulled a folded piece of paper from her suit jacket and looked directly at my mother, father, and sister.

"Are you Evelyn Vance, Richard Vance, and Vanessa Vance?" Detective Miller’s voice carried clearly across the silent lawn, amplified by the natural acoustics of the pavilion.

Richard straightened his tie, taking a step forward with a stern, authoritative posture. "I am Richard Vance. This is a private family event. If there is a noise complaint, you can speak to the venue manager—"

"Mr. Vance," Detective Miller interrupted coldly. "You, your wife, and your daughter Vanessa are under arrest."

A collective gasp echoed across the crowd. Vanessa’s face drained of all color. The black confetti balloon slipped from her fingers, floating uselessly up into the rafters of the pavilion.

"Arrest?" Evelyn laughed hysterically, stepping back. "This is absurd! On what possible grounds? Do you know who my husband is? He’s on the board of—"

"You are being charged with felony criminal trespass, tampering with security measures at a healthcare facility, and attempted child abduction," Detective Miller stated, her voice ironclad.

"Abduction?!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking. "That’s my niece! We went to see my niece!"

"You entered the non-public pediatric intensive care wing of Mercy Ridge Hospital at 2:14 AM using an unauthorized, archived access code," Detective Miller recited, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt. "You tampered with a secure door, attempted to remove a six-year-old child from the premises without parental consent, and presented a forged legal guardianship document to hospital staff."

The guests began whispering frantically. Several of Vanessa’s "influencer" friends immediately raised their phones, recording the scene.

"That’s a lie!" Evelyn screamed, her refined composure completely shattering. "Nora told us to pick Sadie up! Nora is mentally unstable! She’s suffering from postpartum psychosis! She gave us permission!"

"We have the complete audio, video, and text logs from Mrs. Vance’s phone," Officer Reyes interjected, stepping up beside Detective Miller. "At 2:14 AM, Mrs. Vance was sedated post-surgery. Her six-year-old daughter hid in a bathroom to escape you. And your texts from fifteen minutes ago prove you actively denied being at the hospital while threatening Mrs. Vance financially."

"Richard! Do something!" Evelyn screamed as an officer grabbed her wrists, pulling her arms behind her back. The metal handcuffs clicked shut with a loud, unforgiving sound.

"Get your hands off my wife!" Richard roared, reaching out to push the officer.

Instantly, two uniformed officers grabbed Richard, forcing him down against the hood of the police cruiser. His expensive glasses slid off his nose, clattering onto the gravel.

"Richard Vance, you are also being charged with obstruction of justice and resisting arrest," the officer growled, clicking handcuffs around his wrists.

Vanessa burst into hysterical tears, backing away toward the cake table. "Mom! Dad! Tell them I didn't do anything! It was Mom's idea! Mom forged the form! She downloaded it from the internet!"

Evelyn whipped her head around, glaring at Vanessa with pure venom. "Shut your mouth, Vanessa!"

"She did!" Vanessa sobbed, addressing the crowd of filming guests. "Mom made me carry the folder! She said if we got Sadie, Nora would be forced to come to the party to get her! It was all Mom!"

"Silence!" Detective Miller shouted, reading all three of them their Miranda rights as the officers guided them into the back seats of the police cruisers.

As the cars backed down the driveway, their red and blue lights flashing against the pink and blue balloons, the Rosewood Country Club pavilion was left in utter ruin.

Back at Mercy Ridge Hospital, my phone vibrated on the table. It wasn't a text from my family.

It was a notification from a local news outlet’s social media page. A video tagged #RosewoodArrest #GenderRevealDrama was already going viral, showing my mother screaming in handcuffs while my sister threw her under the bus in front of seventy people.

Matthew looked over my shoulder at the screen, a long, quiet sigh of relief escaping his chest.

I looked through the glass at Eliza. The monitor beeped steadily. Her heart rate was stable.

For the first time in three days, I leaned my head back against the pillow and let out a real breath.

The battle had begun, but the monsters were no longer under my bed. They were behind bars.
