Chapter 6 - The Fracture in the Ranks

Two days after the press conference, the ironclad unity of my toxic family began to violently crack under the pressure of incoming criminal indictments.

It started with a secret phone call.

At 8:00 AM on Thursday, Matthew’s phone rang from an unlisted number. When he answered and put it on speaker, my father’s strained, trembling voice echoed through the speaker.

"Matthew... please, don't hang up," Richard gasped. He sounded ten years older, his arrogant posture completely vanished. "I’m calling from a payphone near my lawyer’s building. Evelyn doesn't know I’m making this call."

Matthew looked at me, setting the phone on the tray table. "Speak, Richard. But remember this call is being recorded."

"I... I know," Richard swallowed hard. "Matthew, I need you to talk to Nora. I am facing federal fraud charges because of the access code system, and the real estate board just froze my retirement pension! I didn't know Vanessa forged Nora’s signature! I swear to God I didn't know!"

I leaned toward the phone, my voice dropping into a razor-sharp tone. "You held the door open, Dad. You held the fire door open with a plastic doorstop at two in the morning so Mom and Vanessa could slip past security. You watched them walk into my room."

"Nora!" Richard cried, his voice cracking. "Your mother told me you agreed to it! She told me you had called her at midnight asking her to take Sadie because you were overwhelmed! She said you signed the paper in front of the doctor!"

"And you believed her?" I asked bitterly. "Or did you just do what Evelyn told you to do, like you’ve done your entire life, because it was easier than standing up to her?"

Silence hung heavy on the line for three long seconds.

"She controlled everything, Nora," Richard whispered, sounding broken. "She threatened to divorce me fifteen years ago if I didn't go along with how she treated you. She wanted Vanessa to be the star, and she wanted you to be the quiet servant who handled the mess. But this... this has destroyed us. The bank is calling in our mortgage. Vanessa’s husband just served her with divorce papers this morning!"

My eyebrows shot up. "Mark served Vanessa?"

"He packed his bags last night," Richard revealed, weeping quietly now. "He said he couldn't be married to a woman who would forge a legal document to take a child out of an intensive care unit. Nora... if I give a full sworn statement to the District Attorney against Evelyn and Vanessa, if I admit that Evelyn downloaded the form and forged your signature... will you ask the prosecutor for leniency for me? I can't go to prison, Nora. I won't survive it."

I looked at Matthew, whose face remained an unreadable mask of stone.

For thirty years, my father had watched my mother tear down my self-esteem, minimize my achievements, and blame me for every family failure. He had stood by and watched her ignore my preemies' crisis, demanding a cake instead.

And now, the moment the fire touched his own skin, he was ready to throw his wife and favorite daughter to the wolves to save his own skin.

"Send your sworn written confession to Eleanor Vance," I told him coldly. "If the District Attorney finds your information valuable, they will decide your deal. But do not ever call my husband’s phone again."

I pressed the end button before he could reply.

"He’s terrified," Matthew said quietly.

"He’s a coward," I corrected, looking over at Eliza’s incubator. "He was a coward when I was a child, and he’s a coward now."

An hour later, Eleanor Vance entered the room, holding a fresh sheaf of court documents.

"It’s getting better, Nora," Eleanor said, a triumphant look in her eyes. "Vanessa’s defense attorney just called the DA offering a plea bargain. In exchange for avoiding state prison time, Vanessa is willing to testify that Evelyn was the mastermind behind the entire scheme."

I shook my head, letting out a soft, incredulous laugh. "So my father is offering to testify against my mother, and my sister is offering to testify against my mother."

"Evelyn is completely isolated," Eleanor confirmed. "Her own family is devouring itself to avoid jail time. But there's more good news."

Eleanor walked over to the window, smiling warmly at the NICU. "Dr. Chen just posted his morning clinical assessment for Eliza."

My heart skipped a beat. "What did he say?"

"Her lung tissue has completely re-expanded," Eleanor announced, her voice filled with genuine joy. "Her arterial blood gas numbers are perfect. Dr. Chen is prepping her to be extubated today. She’s coming off the mechanical ventilator!"

I let out a loud gasp, my hands flying to my mouth as tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spilled down my cheeks.

Matthew wrapped his arms around me, holding me tight as we both cried tears of relief.

While my toxic family was busy stabbing each other in the back to escape the consequences of their cruelty, my four-pound baby girl was taking her power back.

She was ready to breathe on her own.
