Chapter 4 - The Quiet Setup

On Saturday afternoon, the suburban street in Columbus was peaceful, lined with maple trees dropping early autumn leaves onto manicured lawns.
Gabriel’s truck sat in the driveway as usual.
To any neighbor passing by, it looked like a standard weekend. But inside the two-story house, a silent, tactical installation was underway.
Gabriel worked alongside Hank, meticulously embedding tiny, microscopic camera lenses into the everyday fabric of the home.
One went into the smoke detector in the utility room where Lucas had been forced to wash clothes in the dark.
Another was placed inside the kitchen wall clock, overlooking the dining table.
Two were hidden in the master bedroom—one aimed directly at the nightstand containing the "WIDOWS" folder, and another covering the walk-in closet.
A fifth camera was disguised inside the living room television frame, capturing the main entryway and staircase.
"Audio sensitivity is set to pick up whispers from fifteen feet away," Hank whispered, testing the wireless feed on his encrypted tablet. "The cloud feed is live. My team in the office will be monitoring this twenty-four hours a day."
"What about Lucas?" Gabriel asked, watching his son through the window as the boy sat in the truck, resting his head against the glass.
"He stays with my wife at our farm out in Delaware County tonight," Hank assured him. "He’s safe, fed, and surrounded by people who will protect him with their lives. You will be in this house alone when they return tomorrow."
"No," Gabriel corrected him softly. "I won't be alone. Clara is in this house. My son's pain is in this house. And thirty years of driving through the dark has given me all the patience I need."
That night, Gabriel sat in the dark living room, just as he had done on Thursday.
He didn't turn on the lights. He didn't watch television. He sat in his leather armchair, sipping cold water, watching the red recording dots blink invisibly in the shadows.
At midnight, his phone buzzed. It was a text message from Candice.
“Hey babe! Miami is so exhausting lol. Shopping with Mom and Renee all day. Wyatt got a new designer jacket! How’s the Phoenix run? Make sure Lucas finishes washing the rugs before we get back tomorrow afternoon. See you Sunday night! Love you! 😘”
Gabriel stared at the glowing screen for a long moment.
He didn't reply with anger. He didn't send a threat.

He typed back three simple words:
“Drive safe, Candice.”
