Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The high-definition video began playing immediately at full volume.
The screen showed the pitch-black utility room from Thursday night. The sound of cold water splashing in a plastic bucket echoed loudly through the living room.
Then came Lucas’s small, shivering voice: “They went to Miami on vacation... They told me everything had to be clean when they got back...”
Then came Gabriel’s voice: “Roll up your sleeves.”
The camera zoomed in close—showing the severe yellowing bruises, the deep red friction scrapes, the defensive marks on the boy’s forearms, and his trembling shoulders.
Evelyn gasped softly. Renee’s jaw dropped open.
Candice’s face turned from tan to an ash-gray pale in less than two seconds.
"You... you recorded him?" Candice whispered, her voice cracking.
"That's just the beginning," Gabriel said, swiping his thumb across the screen.
The next image appeared: a certified forensic medical report from St. Jude Community Health Clinic, signed by Dr. Harrison Vance, complete with high-resolution photographic evidence of the deep tissue trauma across Lucas’s back and ribs.
"This report was filed with the Columbus Police Department Child Protection Division on Friday morning," Gabriel said, his tone devoid of any emotion. "Along with a formal felony complaint for child abuse, medical neglect, and physical endangerment."
"You bastard!" Renee shrieked, taking a step toward Gabriel. "How dare you file police reports against our family! We helped you raise that pathetic, useless brat!"
"Shut up, Renee!" Candice snapped, her panic boiling over as she turned back to Gabriel. "Gabriel, listen to me! This is a huge misunderstanding! Lucas fell down the stairs two weeks ago! He told you he fell at school! He’s trying to destroy our marriage because he hates me!"
"He didn't fall down the stairs, Candice," Gabriel said quietly. "And he didn't sell his mother's engagement ring at the pawn shop on 5th Avenue three weeks ago either."
The room went dead silent.
The air was pulled out of the house as if an invisible window had shattered.
Candice froze. Her hands began to shake uncontrollably.
"What... what did you say?" she stammered.
Gabriel reached into his pocket and pulled out a stack of paper copies. He tossed them onto the glass coffee table between them.
They scattered like falling leaves.
Pawn receipts bearing Candice’s signature.
Bank statements showing thousands of dollars transferred from Gabriel’s joint payroll account into Apex Capital Holdings LLC.
And on top of the pile lay a high-resolution photograph of the "WIDOWS" folder sitting inside Candice’s nightstand—showing the forged $1.5 million insurance policy on Gabriel and the $500,000 policy on Lucas.
Evelyn let out a choked scream, clutching her chest. "Candice... what did he find?! What did he see?!"
"He went through my room," Candice whispered, her eyes wide with pure, unadulterated terror. "He went through my private drawers..."
"I didn't just go through your drawers, Candice," Gabriel said, stepping closer until he was standing just two feet away from her. "I know about Arthur Vance in Indiana. I know about Thomas Miller in Kentucky. And I know why you married me two years after Clara died."
Candice backed away, her heel catching on the rug, stumbling against the sofa.
"You're crazy!" she screamed, her voice turning hysterical. "You're delusional! That folder isn't mine! I don't know what those papers are! Someone put them there! You forged those receipts to get rid of me!"

She turned to Wyatt and Renee. "Call our lawyer! Call Julian Sterling right now!"
"Julian Sterling won't be answering his phone today, Candice," a cold, unfamiliar voice called out from the front porch.
