Chapter 5 - The Grand Entrance

Sunday afternoon, 3:15 PM.

The sky over Columbus was overcast, gray clouds hanging heavy over the neighborhood.

A luxury rental SUV—a midnight-black Cadillac Escalade—pulled into Gabriel’s driveway, blocking his pickup truck.

Loud laughter exploded from inside the vehicle as the doors flew open.

Wyatt, a tall, heavy-set sixteen-year-old wearing a neon Miami palm-tree hoodie and expensive high-top sneakers, hopped out first, tossing a half-eaten bag of fast-food trash directly onto Gabriel’s front lawn.

"Yo, this place smells like boredom!" Wyatt shouted, kicking open the front screen door. "Hey, loser! Get down here and carry my bags upstairs!"

Behind him walked Renee—a sharp-featured woman with bleached-blonde hair and oversized sunglasses—followed by her mother, Evelyn, who wore a silver crucifix necklace and carried a designer shopping bag from Saks Fifth Avenue.

Finally, Candice stepped through the door. She was wearing a white linen jumpsuit, her tan fresh, a golden chain sparkling around her neck.

"Lucas!" Candice called out in a sharp, nasal screech that echoed through the foyer. "Where are you?! The laundry better be folded and ironed, or you're not getting dinner until Tuesday!"

None of them noticed the absolute silence hanging over the house.

None of them noticed that the kitchen lights were off, or that the smell of old bleach still lingered in the utility room.

Wyatt threw his heavy leather duffel bag toward the bottom of the staircase. "Where is that freeloader? I need my shoes cleaned!"

"He's not upstairs, Wyatt," a voice spoke from the shadows of the kitchen.

Candice gasped, dropping her handbag onto the entryway rug.

Gabriel stepped out from the dark hallway, dressed in his work flannel and heavy boots. His expression was utterly unreadable—his face like carved stone, his dark eyes fixed on his wife.

"Gabriel?!" Candice stammered, putting a hand over her heart as her face flushed with sudden surprise. "What... what are you doing here?! You were supposed to be in Phoenix until Tuesday!"

"The shipment got canceled," Gabriel said calmly, stepping into the center of the living room. "I came home Thursday night."

A split-second panic flashed across Candice’s eyes, but she quickly smoothed her expression, stepping forward with an exaggerated, artificial smile.

"Oh, sweetheart! You scared us!" She reached out to hug him, but Gabriel didn't move an inch. He stood rigid, letting her arms fall uselessly back to her sides. "Well... why didn't you call me? We were so worried about leaving the house empty!"

"The house wasn't empty," Gabriel said, glancing at Evelyn and Renee, who were exchanging uneasy glances near the door. "Lucas was here."

Renee scoffed, tossing her hair. "Oh, that boy. Gabriel, honestly, you spoil him too much. We left him plenty of chores to keep him out of trouble while we were supporting Candice on a well-deserved family trip."

"He was hand-washing your clothes in a bucket of ice water at eleven o'clock at night in total darkness," Gabriel said, his voice flat, dangerously quiet. "Because you told him using electricity for his laundry was a waste of your money."

Evelyn stepped forward, adjusting her crucifix with an air of righteous indignation.

"Now see here, Gabriel," Evelyn said in a sweet, dripping tone. "That boy has a discipline problem. He lies, he steals from Candice’s purse, and he neglects his duties. We are trying to instill a work ethic in him! You're away on the road all the time—you don't see how difficult he makes things for my daughter!"

"Is that why Wyatt slapped him across the face last Tuesday?" Gabriel asked, turning his gaze slowly toward the sixteen-year-old bully.

Wyatt sneered, crossing his arms defensively. "The kid was talking back! He took my Xbox controller without asking! He deserved it!"

"He didn't take your controller, Wyatt," Gabriel said softly. "It was under your own bed. I found it Friday morning."

Candice’s smile completely disappeared. Her eyes narrowed into cold, sharp slits.

"Gabriel, I don't like your tone," she said, stepping closer and lowering her voice into a warning hiss. "You've been driving too long. You're tired and confused. Lucas has been manipulating you again. He’s mentally unstable—you know that! I’ve told you a hundred times he needs professional help!"

May you like

"He doesn't need professional help, Candice," Gabriel said.

He pulled his phone from his pocket, tapped the screen twice, and held it up facing the four of them.
