Chapter 5 - The Arraignment Reckoning

The County Superior Courthouse was cold, silent, and imposing.

At 10:00 AM sharp, the doors to Courtroom 4A opened. A dozen reporters sat in the gallery, tipped off by the sudden arrest of one of the county’s most prominent real estate couples.

Julian and Chloe Vance were led in through the side door, wearing bright orange county jail jumpsuits, their wrists and ankles chained together.

Julian looked disheveled. His hair was greasy, his designer posture gone, replaced by a desperate, nervous twitch. Chloe was weeping silently, her hands trembling as she tried to cover her face from the news cameras.

Beside them stood Arthur Pendelton, a high-priced defense attorney known for getting wealthy white-collar criminals off on technicalities.

Judge Arthur Thorne took the bench, his dark robes falling around him like armor. He adjusted his glasses and looked down at the defense table with eyes that could cut through steel.

“We are here for the arraignment and bail hearing in the matter of State of Texas versus Julian Vance and Chloe Vance,” Judge Thorne announced. “Mr. Pendelton, I have received your motion for emergency bail release.”

Pendelton stood up, buttoning his suit jacket with practiced confidence.

“Your Honor,” Pendelton began, his voice ringing with theatrical outrage. “My clients are pillars of this community! What we have here is a tragic, blown-out-of-proportion family dispute orchestrated by the defendant’s sister, Elena Vance, who is using her position in the Attorney General’s office to carry out a personal vendetta!”

In the gallery, a few reporters began scribbling notes.

“Mrs. Margaret Vance suffers from advanced dementia,” Pendelton continued, holding up a paper. “She has suffered multiple accidental falls due to her medication. My clients have expended immense personal funds to care for her. We request immediate release on personal recognizance so they can resume managing their business.”

Judge Thorne didn't interrupt. He simply turned his gaze to the prosecution table, where I sat alongside Lead Prosecutor Marcus Sterling.

“Prosecution?” Judge Thorne asked.

I stood up slowly. I didn't use notes. I didn't raise my voice. I walked to the center of the courtroom, holding a single manila folder.

“Your Honor,” I said, my voice echoing clearly through the high ceilings. “The defense claims my mother suffers from dementia and accidental falls. The State requests permission to project Exhibit A onto the courtroom screens.”

Judge Thorne nodded. “Granted.”

The courtroom lights dimmed slightly as the large high-definition monitors mounted on the walls flickered to life.

A high-resolution photograph appeared on the screens: my mother’s frail, bruised back, displaying deep purple rope burns around her wrists and clear, finger-shaped contusions across her ribs.

Gasps erupted from the gallery. A female reporter in the front row covered her mouth in sheer horror.

Julian winced, turning his head away from the screen, but Chloe stared at it, her face going completely blank.

“This photograph was taken sixteen hours ago at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital,” I stated, stepping toward the defense table. “Along with this, the State has recovered a handwritten ledger from the defendants’ master bedroom safe, detailing a systematic strategy to starve, drug, and physically abuse Margaret Vance until she surrendered her estate titles.”

I pulled out a secondary document.

“Furthermore, forensic toxicologists found lethal levels of unprescribed Haloperidol in her bloodstream—a drug supplied illegally by a doctor who was arrested one hour ago by state troopers.”

Arthur Pendelton swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically toward Julian. “Your Honor... my clients were unaware of the specific dosage—"

“Sit down, Mr. Pendelton!” Judge Thorne barked, slamming his gavel down with a noise that sounded like a gunshot.

The entire courtroom fell dead silent.

Judge Thorne leaned over his bench, staring down at Julian and Chloe with pure, unadulterated contempt.

“Mr. Vance. Mrs. Vance,” Judge Thorne said, his voice trembling with controlled fury. “In my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely witnessed an act of such staggering, cold-blooded human depravity.”

He tapped the legal documents before him.

“The motion for bail is DENIED. Both defendants will be remanded to the County Detention Center without bond pending trial. Furthermore, I am issuing a complete freeze on all global assets, personal accounts, and real estate properties owned or controlled by the defendants.”

“Your Honor, please!” Chloe shrieked, breaking into wild, desperate sobs as the bailiffs stepped forward. “It was Julian! He told me to do it! He was the one who tied her up!”

“Shut up, Chloe!” Julian roared, turning on his wife in open court. “You were the one who wanted the money! You’re the one who found the doctor!”

The bailiffs grabbed both of them by the arms, dragging them backward toward the holding cell doors as they spat curses and blame at each other in front of every rolling news camera in the room.

I stood at the prosecution table, watching them go, completely motionless.

The trap had closed. And now, they were going to tear each other apart.
