Chapter 7 - The Master Bedroom Warrant

Four weeks before the trial was scheduled to begin, a secondary search warrant was executed on a commercial storage facility outside Houston—a property we discovered through an unlisted monthly auto-debit on Julian’s personal credit card.
I accompanied Detective Miller and two forensic officers as they cut the heavy steel padlocked shutter on Storage Unit 408.
The door rolled up with a loud, metallic clatter, revealing a dark, concrete room filled with dust-covered boxes, antique furniture, and several sealed wardrobe trunks.
“Why would they rent a storage unit two hours away from their house?” Detective Miller wondered, shining her flashlight into the dark interior.
“Because this isn't where they hid what they stole from Mom,” I said, stepping inside and pointing to a row of wooden trunks bearing my late father’s initials: R.E.V.
“This is where they hid what they stole from Dad after he died six years ago.”
We opened the first trunk.
Inside lay my father’s personal history—his military medals from Vietnam, his hand-carved mahogany watch collection, original family photo albums spanning fifty years, and my grandmother’s heirloom diamond ring that had vanished three weeks after my father’s funeral.
Julian and Chloe had systematically stripped my mother’s home of every sentimental item of value years ago, storing them away until they could sell them off quietly on the high-end estate auction market.
Underneath the photo albums, Detective Miller pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box.
Inside sat a small, micro-cassette tape recorder—an old-fashioned device my father used to record his daily business notes before his passing.
“There’s a tape inside,” Miller said, handing it to me.
I picked up the recorder, blew the dust off the speaker, and pressed the play button.
The tape whirred to life, crackling with static before a voice came through—warm, deep, and familiar.
It was my father’s voice, recorded eight years ago, shortly before he died.
“This is Richard Vance. I am making this recording in the presence of my legal counsel. I have noticed troubling behavior from my son, Julian. He has repeatedly attempted to access my private trust accounts without my permission... If anything should happen to me, I explicitly direct that my estate be placed under the sole trusteeship of my daughter, Elena Vance. Julian cannot be trusted with money, nor can he be trusted to care for his mother...”
I stood in the center of the dark storage unit, holding the recorder close to my chest as tears finally spilled over my eyelashes.
My father had seen it.
Even back then, through his failing health, my father had recognized the cold, parasitic nature living inside his own son. He had tried to protect us, but Julian had hidden this tape away after my father’s death, lying to the family about the existence of a revised trust.
“Elena?” Detective Miller asked gently, placing a hand on my shoulder. “Are you okay?”
May you like
I wiped the tears from my cheeks, turned the recorder off, and placed it carefully into an evidence bag.
“I’m better than okay, Sarah,” I said, looking out toward the bright sunlight streaming through the open door. “This tape just sealed their fate forever.”
