Chapter 9 - The Hammer of the Law

The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes.
When the court reassembled at 3:00 PM, the atmosphere inside the courtroom was thick with unbearable tension.
Judge Arthur Thorne took the bench, his face solemn as he accepted the verdict sheets from the jury foreperson.
“Will the defendants please stand,” Judge Thorne commanded.
Julian and Chloe stood up, held upright on either side by county bailiffs.
“On Count One: First-Degree Felony Elder Abuse and Exploitation,” the foreperson read loudly. “We find the defendant, Julian Vance, GUILTY.”
“We find the defendant, Chloe Vance, GUILTY.”
“On Count Two: Aggravated False Imprisonment using Deadly Restraints...” “GUILTY.” “On Count Three: Grand Larceny and Systemic Corporate Fraud...” “GUILTY.” “On Count Four: Felony Forgery and Tampering with Legal Documents...” “GUILTY.” “On Count Five: Illegal Possession and Administration of Controlled Substances...” “GUILTY.”
Guilty on every single count.
Chloe collapsed into her chair, sobbing uncontrollably, her face buried in her hands. Julian stood frozen, his jaw slack, staring at the floor as if he couldn't comprehend that his wealth and charm had failed to save him.
Judge Thorne set the papers down and leaned over his bench, his eyes boring into both defendants.
“Julian Vance. Chloe Vance,” Judge Thorne announced, his voice booming through the silent courtroom.
“You operated a systematic house of horror against a vulnerable elderly woman who had given you nothing but life and love. Your greed was boundless, your cruelty was methodical, and your remorse is non-existent.”
He raised his gavel.
“Pursuant to the laws of this State, I sentence you both to FORTY YEARS in the State Penitentiary without the possibility of early parole. Furthermore, I order complete asset forfeiture of all real estate, luxury vehicles, and financial accounts owned by the defendants, to be paid as full restitution to Margaret Vance.”
BANG!
The gavel struck the hardwood block with a thunderous force that echoed like a final door closing forever.
Bailiffs immediately pulled Julian and Chloe’s arms behind their backs, snapping heavy iron handcuffs around their wrists.
As they dragged Julian out through the side doors, he finally turned toward us, his voice cracking into a desperate, pathetic wail:

“Mom! Please! Tell them to stop! Mom!”
My mother sat quietly in her chair, holding my hand. She didn't look back at him. She didn't say a word. She simply watched the door close behind him, closing the darkest chapter of her life once and for all.
