Chapter 2 - The Step Into the Dark

The air inside the abandoned sports complex grew so dense with tension that even the flickering industrial overhead lights seemed to hum in a lower, more menacing key. Men who handled illegal firearms and settled multi-million dollar turf wars with a nod were suddenly frozen, paralyzed by the sheer impossibility of what was unfolding before their eyes.
Leo Doyle tried to grab his sister's arm, his fingers clawing at empty air as Maisie slipped past him.
“Maisie, stop! What are you doing? Get back here!” Leo hissed, his voice cracking with a mixture of terror and absolute disbelief. He took half a step forward, ready to chase her, but a pair of massive enforcers wearing custom tactical vests planted themselves directly in his path, their stony glares warning him that one more movement would earn him a broken rib.
Maisie didn't stop. Her small canvas sneakers made barely a whisper against the concrete floor, her hand sliding along the cold, rusted support beams to guide her path. She couldn't see the jagged iron spikes of the chain-link fence, nor could she see the towering, muscled mass of Cyrus thrashing against the reinforced steel bars. But she could feel the heavy, concussive thud of the dog's body against the cage, and more than that, she felt the frantic, shattering vibrations of sheer terror radiating from the animal's soul.
To everyone else in the room, Cyrus was a weapon of mass destruction, a four-legged executioner bred for violence and broken by cruelty. To Maisie, he was simply someone who was screaming in a language nobody else bothered to translate.
“Hey,” Maisie whispered, her voice clear, small, and entirely devoid of fear.
The word wasn't a shout; it didn't try to compete with the roaring growl echoing off the concrete walls. It cut through the chaos like a sharp knife through silk.
Julian Hart stiffened. He lowered his fists, his heavy leather fighting gloves dangling from his grip as his sharp, analytical eyes locked onto the small figure walking steadily toward the death trap in the center of the room. Julian’s brow furrowed, a rare expression of genuine shock flickering across his usually impenetrable features. He had expected foolish bounty hunters, arrogant trainers, and desperate mercenaries. He had never expected a child. A blind child, at that.
“Who let a civilian in here?” Julian’s voice cut through the arena like a whip, cold and sharp. “Get her out of my sight before that animal tears her to ribbons.”
“She slipped past the loading dock, Mr. Hart! I swear I didn't know she was following!” Leo shouted from the back, his face drained of all color, sweat beading on his forehead as he stared helplessly at his sister. “Maisie, please! Come back! That dog will kill you!”
Maisie ignored them all. She reached the perimeter of the containment zone, right where the dirt floor met the cold steel of Cyrus’s cage. The German Shepherd lunged forward with explosive force, slamming his massive snout against the bars just inches from her face, a shower of white-hot spittle flying from his jaws as he let out a deafening, blood-curdling roar.

The crowd instinctively flinched, several men stepping backward.
Maisie didn't flinch. She didn't blink. She stopped walking, tilted her head slightly to the left, and stood perfectly still, letting the deafening noise wash over her without retreating an inch.
