Chapter 5 - Unlocking the Cage

Viktor swallowed hard, stepping toward the heavy padlock securing the chain-link door of the enclosure. He pulled a massive iron key from his tactical vest, his hand visibly shaking as he inserted it into the rusted lock. The metal clicked open with a loud, echoing snap that made several career criminals flinch.

“Mr. Hart, if that animal so much as twitches, I’m putting a round through its skull before it can cross the threshold,” Viktor warned, keeping his pistol unholstered and aimed directly at Cyrus’s chest.

“If you fire a single bullet that isn't ordered by me, Viktor, your own skull will be the next thing decorated across this concrete,” Julian replied smoothly, his eyes never leaving Maisie. “Step back.”

Viktor backed away slowly, pulling the heavy steel door open. It swung outward with a grinding screech, exposing the interior of the cage.

The moment the barrier was removed, the air in the arena shifted. The invisible wall of hostility vanished. Cyrus didn't lunge. He didn't bare his teeth. He remained pressed against the floor, his amber eyes shifting from Viktor’s drawn gun back to Maisie’s open, empty palms.

“Maisie, get away from there right now!” Leo screamed from the back, breaking past one of the distracted guards and taking three steps into the arena before another enforcer grabbed him by the collar and slammed him back against the support beam. “Leave her alone! Take the money, take whatever you want, just don't let that thing touch her!”

“Quiet him down,” Julian commanded casually, flicking a hand toward Leo without looking back. An enforcer delivered a sharp chop to Leo’s shoulder, silencing his protests into a breathless wheeze.

Maisie didn't flinch at the shouting. She slowly slid her hand past the threshold of the open cage door, moving with the deliberate, unthreatening grace of someone who understood the physics of trust.

“It’s okay,” she murmured, her voice like a cool breeze over a fevered brow. “You're safe now. Nobody is going to hurt you anymore.”

Cyrus let out a low, vibrating rumble that sounded almost like a purr. He inched forward, his heavy paws sliding across the concrete until his massive head rested directly in the palm of Maisie’s small, open hand.

The entire warehouse sucked in its breath as one.

The most feared, aggressive, unapproachable animal in the entire Midwest — a dog that had cost millions in damages, destroyed careers, and terrorized every criminal syndicate from Chicago to St. Louis — was currently leaning his scarred, blood-stained head into the palm of a blind little girl, his eyes gently slipping shut for the first time in three years.

Julian Hart took a slow step forward, his polished leather shoes stopping just inches from Cyrus’s tail. He looked down at the dog, then down at the girl. The hard, cynical armor that had protected his heart through decades of betrayal and underworld warfare cracked just a fraction.

“How did you do that?” Julian asked again, his voice uncharacteristically hushed.

“I didn't do anything,” Maisie replied softly, her fingers gently scratching behind Cyrus’s torn, battered ear. “I just listened to what everyone else was too proud to hear.”
