Chapter 4 - The Billionaire's Intrigue

Julian Hart narrowed his eyes, stepping up right beside the crouching girl. He could feel the residual heat radiating off the animal, but more than that, he felt a strange, unfamiliar sensation twisting in his chest — curiosity.
In Julian’s world, curiosity was a luxury that usually got people killed. Everything had a price, a motive, an underlying betrayal waiting to be uncovered. But looking at the blind girl kneeling fearlessly before the most vicious beast in the underworld, Julian found zero calculation. Only pure, unadulterated instinct.
“How are you doing that?” Julian asked quietly, his voice dropping below the carrying threshold of the crowd, intended only for her ears.
“I listen,” Maisie answered simply, her fingers twitching slightly against the dirt. “People with eyes only see what's in front of them. You see teeth, fur, scars. You see a monster because that's what you trained him to be. But if you listen to his heartbeat... it’s beating twice as fast as it should. He’s drowning in his own skin.”
Julian’s jaw tightened. The words hit uncomfortably close to home. He knew what it felt like to be trapped in skin that felt like armor, to be surrounded by people who only looked at the teeth and the power, never noticing the cage built around the heart.
“He killed a man six months ago,” Julian stated flatly, testing her resolve. “A professional handler who tried to feed him. Ripped his arm open down to the bone. You think he cares about your heartbeat?”
“He cares that nobody ever asked him if he wanted to fight,” Maisie whispered back, her voice carrying a profound weight that seemed entirely too heavy for a child her age.
Cyrus let out a long, shuddering exhale. Slowly, agonizingly slow, the giant German Shepherd began to crawl forward on his belly. Every muscle in his scarred frame trembled. The jagged white scar running across his left eye twitched under the harsh industrial light. He crept toward the cage door until his snout was pressed directly against the vertical iron bars.
Behind the cage, Leo crossed himself, whispering frantic prayers under his breath, utterly convinced his sister was about to be devoured alive. The enforcers gripped their weapons tighter, knuckles turning white.
Cyrus pressed his nose against the iron bar, right where Maisie’s small hand rested on the other side. He couldn't touch her skin through the thick metal, but he could smell her. He inhaled deeply, once, twice, three times. The aggressive feral scent of panic and rage that had defined him for years seemed to evaporate, replaced by a strange, heavy stillness.
Then, slowly, the dog lowered his head further and let out a soft, low whine.
The entire warehouse went dead silent. Men who had witnessed brutal interrogations without flinching stared in absolute, jaw-dropping disbelief. The unbeatable, bloodthirsty beast of Hart’s underground empire was whining like a puppy.
Julian stared down at the dog, then looked at the blind girl. The one-million-dollar bounty he had casually tossed out as a sadistic test of greed suddenly felt entirely inadequate.
“Open the gate,” Julian commanded without breaking his gaze from Maisie.

His chief enforcer, a hulking brute named Viktor, stepped forward, his eyes wide with horror. “Boss, are you out of your mind? If you open that door—”
“I said,” Julian repeated, his voice dropping an octave into a tone so lethally cold that Viktor froze instantly, “open the damn gate.”
