Chapter 4 - The Arrests in the Ballroom

The doors slammed against the limestone walls, echoing like gunshots through the vaulted ceiling.
Four men in dark suits stepped into the ballroom, flanked by two uniformed state troopers. They didn't look like wedding guests. They moved with the unmistakable, disciplined precision of federal law enforcement agents.
The lead investigator—a tall, broad-shouldered man with a federal badge pinned to his belt—strode down the center aisle, ignoring the stunned gasps of the guests. His eyes locked directly onto Lorraine, who froze mid-stride, her clawed hands still outstretched toward the stage.
“Mrs. Lorraine Vance-Vance?” the agent asked, his voice ringing across the silent room.
“I—I am a guest here! This is a private event! Who do you think you are?” Lorraine stammered, backing away as the agent closed the distance.
The agent pulled a crisp, folded document from his breast pocket and snapped it open.
“Agent Miller, Federal Financial Crimes and Arson Division,” he announced loudly. “Mrs. Vance, you are being placed under arrest for corporate fraud, federal wire embezzlement, conspiracy to commit arson, and reckless endangerment resulting in severe bodily injury.”
Before Lorraine could draw another breath, two agents stepped forward, gently but firmly grasping her wrists behind her back. The heavy click of steel handcuffs echoed chillingly through the ballroom.
Celeste shrieked, bursting into hysterical tears as she grabbed her mother’s arm. “Mom! Mom, do something! Call our lawyers!”
“Mr. Thomas Vance,” Agent Miller continued, turning his gaze toward the executive vice president who was frantically trying to slip out through a side exit. Two troopers intercepted Thomas before he could reach the door, pinning his arms behind his back and clicking the second set of cuffs into place. “You are also named in the federal indictment as a primary co-conspirator in the Meridian Holdings fraud scheme.”
The ballroom descended into absolute chaos.
Reporters were flashing cameras furiously, capturing every agonizing second of the Ashford family’s public execution. Guests who had spent the last two years ignoring my existence or laughing at my scars now looked at me with a mixture of terror and awe. They realized in that single moment that I wasn't a victim to be pitied; I was the architect of their downfall.
Daniel stepped back up beside me, slipping his arm around my waist once more. He looked down at me, his eyes shining with profound pride and deep, unwavering love.
“Told you,” Daniel whispered softly. “They didn't know what they were walking into.”
Agent Miller walked up to the edge of the stage, looking up at us. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small evidence bag containing the silver flash drive.
“Mrs. Sterling,” Miller said respectfully, using my married name for the first time. “Your forensic packet matched our server decryption down to the millisecond. The district attorney has already signed the asset freeze warrants for every Ashford holding company.”

“Thank you, Agent Miller,” I replied, my voice steady and clear. “You’ll find all backup logs uploaded to the secure cloud terminal as well.”
As Lorraine and Thomas were marched down the aisle in handcuffs—their designer clothes dragging against the marble floor, their faces pale with humiliation—they passed right by the table where they had mocked my scars just twenty minutes earlier. Lorraine refused to look up, her head bowed in disgrace.
