Chapter 8 - Stripping the Empire

By the end of the second month, the liquidation of Ashford assets was complete.

The grand Ashford Hotel—the very venue where our wedding had taken place—was seized by federal courts and auctioned off to satisfy restitution orders for defrauded investors and victims of the lodge fire. The Ashford name, once synonymous with luxury, power, and untouchable social status in the city, was now legally dissolved, wiped from corporate registries, building facades, and historical records alike.

I stood on the grand marble steps of the courthouse, holding a thick manila folder containing the final deed transfers and asset restitution clearances.

Daniel stood beside me, wearing a simple navy blazer, holding my hand tightly.

“It’s over,” Daniel said, looking down at me with a soft, affectionate smile. “The empire they built on lies and ashes is completely gone.”

“Good,” I said, breathing in the crisp autumn air. “An empire built on ash deserves to burn.”

Flashbulbs popped from across the street as a small cluster of journalists caught sight of us, but we didn't shy away. For two years, I had hidden my scars beneath sleeves and heavy makeup, letting people whisper behind my back. Now, I wore a sleeveless silk blouse, letting the pale, intricate patterns of my survival catch the afternoon sun for the entire world to see.

I wasn't a victim anymore. I was the one who held the pen that wrote the final chapter of their downfall.
