Chapter 9 - Justice Served in Full View

The federal courtroom was packed to absolute capacity on the morning of the sentencing hearing.
The gallery hummed with reporters, financial analysts, and former employees whose pensions had been nearly destroyed by the Ashford family’s embezzlement scheme.
Lorraine and Thomas Vance sat at the defense table, wearing standard orange federal detention jumpsuits. The designer jewelry was gone; the immaculate hair and haughty sneers had been replaced by the hollow, broken expressions of people who finally understood that their wealth and power could not shield them from reality.
The federal judge, a stern-faced woman with decades of bench experience, adjusted her glasses and looked down from her elevated mahogany podium.
“The court has reviewed the complete evidentiary record, the forensic audits compiled by Mrs. Claire Sterling, and the harrowing testimonies of survivors from the Ashford Mountain Lodge fire,” the judge announced, her voice echoing clearly through the silent courtroom.
She paused, her gaze sweeping across the defense table before locking onto Lorraine and Thomas.
“The crimes committed by the defendants were not merely acts of financial greed; they were calculated, deliberate acts of depraved indifference to human life. You traded human lives for corporate balance sheets, and you attempted to destroy the very person who brought your corruption to light.”
The judge brought her gavel down with a sharp, resonant crack that seemed to shake the courtroom walls.
“Lorraine Vance, for conspiracy, wire fraud, and accessory to arson, I sentence you to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole. Thomas Vance, for corporate embezzlement and reckless endangerment, you are sentenced to thirty years.”
A collective gasp rippled through the gallery. Lorraine buried her face in her cuffed hands, letting out a ragged, broken sob, while Thomas stared blankly ahead, his mouth slightly open in absolute horror.

Federal marshals immediately stepped forward, placing their hands on the shoulders of the convicted pair and escorting them through the side doors toward maximum-security holding cells.
The Ashford dynasty had officially come to an end.
