Chapter 6 - Shadows at the Gates

The fragile peace inside the Westchester estate was shattered three nights later by the low, ominous rumble of uninvited engines rolling up the private drive.

Adrian sat at the head of the mahogany dining table, reviewing encrypted intelligence reports on his tablet while Hannah and Claire sat across from him, quietly decorating sugar cookies with colored sprinkles. For the first time, the sprawling, intimidating dining room felt less like a tomb and more like a home.

Then the exterior security monitors flickered.

The amber lights illuminating the perimeter fence suddenly died, plunging the outer gardens into pitch-black shadow.

In a fraction of a second, the gentle domestic warmth vanished.

Adrian stood up so fast his chair screeched against the hardwood floor. The gentleman father dissolved instantly, replaced by the ruthless, calculating syndicate boss who had survived fifteen years of internal coups and federal stings.

"Bram," Adrian barked into his lapel comms link, his voice dropping into a lethal, ice-cold register.

"Boss," Bram’s voice crackled back instantly, tense and urgent. "We got an active breach at the west gate. Three unmarked black SUVs. Heavy ordnance. They bypassed the biometric sensors using a localized military-grade scrambler. It's the Moretti syndicate. They think you're vulnerable."

Adrian’s jaw tightened into a rigid bar of steel. His hand slipped beneath his jacket, gripping the textured polymer grip of his Sig Sauer P320.

He looked toward the dining room door.

"Lock down the safe room in the basement," Adrian commanded, his eyes locking onto Hannah with an intensity that burned like a blowtorch. "Take Claire. Do not come out for any reason until I give the all-clear."

Hannah didn't flinch. She didn't gasp or freeze. Her university counseling training and her survival instincts fused into a single, razor-sharp focus. She grabbed Claire by the hand, her grip firm and unyielding.

"Come on, Claire," Hannah said, keeping her voice entirely level. "We're going on an adventure to the basement vault."

"Dad?" Claire whispered, her eyes wide with sudden terror, clutching a half-decorated sugar cookie in her small hand. "What's happening?"

"Stay with Hannah," Adrian said, stepping forward and kneeling briefly to press a quick, fierce kiss to the top of his daughter's head—a gesture so tender it felt foreign on his scarred face. "I'll be right back."

Before Claire could answer, Adrian turned and strode out of the room, his long legs eating up the distance toward the armory foyer.

As the heavy steel doors of the panic room slid shut around Hannah and Claire, the faint, distant pop-pop-pop of suppressed gunfire began to echo through the estate's ventilation shafts.
