Chapter 7 - The Test of Fire

The basement vault was a reinforced concrete bunker designed to withstand a direct mortar strike, lined with medical supplies, communications arrays, and emergency rations.

Inside, the emergency red lighting cast long, jittery shadows across the concrete walls.

Claire sat huddled in the corner beneath a heavy wool blanket, her knees pulled to her chest, her small body shaking violently as the dull, concussive thud of explosions rattled the foundation above.

Hannah sat right beside her, wrapping her arms around the trembling child, whispering rhythmic, soothing phrases into her hair.

"It's okay, sweetie. Your dad is the safest person in this city. Nothing is going to get past him."

"They're going to hurt him," Claire sobbed, burying her face in Hannah's sweater. "They're going to kill him just like they killed Mommy!"

"Listen to me," Hannah said, pulling Claire back so she had to look directly into her eyes. Her green gaze burned with fierce, unbreakable conviction. "Your father is a survivor. He built an entire empire out of stone and iron just to keep you safe. He isn't going anywhere. Do you hear me?"

Suddenly, the encrypted comms panel embedded in the bunker wall hissed to life.

Static.

Then Bram’s voice cut through the speaker, breathless and strained.

"Miss Sterling... if you copy... the perimeter breach has been contained, but... but the boss took a round to the shoulder near the west corridor. He's bleeding out fast, and Moretti's cleanup crew is pushing toward the main stairwell. He told me to secure the panic room, but... but he's locked outside."

Hannah’s heart stopped.

Adrian was wounded. He was bleeding in the hallway, cut off from medical supplies, exposed to enemy fire.

She looked at Claire. Then she looked at the heavy steel override lever on the bunker wall.

"Stay here, Claire," Hannah said, her voice dropping into a tone that brooked zero argument.

"No! Don't leave me!" Claire screamed, grabbing her wrist.

"I'm coming right back," Hannah promised, her eyes shining with fierce resolve. "I have to go get your father."

Before Claire could protest, Hannah yanked the manual override lever. The heavy steel door slid open with a hydraulic hiss.

Hannah didn't hesitate. She stepped out into the dim, smoke-filled hallway of the Westchester estate, armed with nothing more than a heavy metal flashlight, a first-aid kit from the bunker wall, and a terrifying, unshakable courage.
