Chapter 8 - A New Dynasty

The hallway outside the west corridor smelled of cordite, gunsmoke, and hot copper.
Hannah crept along the mahogany-paneled walls, her rubber-soled flats making no sound against the Persian rugs. Around the corner, near the grand staircase, two men in tactical black gear were sweeping the corridor with submachine guns raised, muttering curses in low Italian.
Hannah gripped the heavy metal flashlight in her right hand.
She didn't wait for them to spot her. Stepping out from the shadows, she swung the heavy metal cylinder with every ounce of strength she possessed, catching the lead enforcer squarely across the temple. He dropped like a felled oak.
The second man spun around, shouting in shock, but before he could raise his weapon, a heavy, dark shadow materialized from the doorway behind him.
Crack.
Adrian Valenti—bleeding heavily from a deep flesh wound in his left shoulder, his face pale and slick with sweat—slammed the butt of his Sig Sauer down onto the second intruder's neck, dropping him instantly to the carpet.
For a second, Adrian swayed on his feet, his breathing shallow and ragged, his hand pressing against his torn shirt as dark blood seeped through his fingers.
Hannah rushed forward, catching him under his good arm before he hit the floor.
"I told you... to stay... in the bunker," Adrian rasped, his dark eyes burning with fierce frustration even as he leaned his heavy weight against her shoulder.
"And I told you I wasn't going to let you bleed out in your own hallway," Hannah retorted, her voice shaking slightly as she dragged him toward the nearest guest suite. "Now shut up and let me play doctor."
Twenty minutes later, after digging a bullet fragment out of his shoulder with surgical precision using sterilized tweezers and wrapping the wound in clean gauze, Hannah stood back, wiping her hands on a towel.
Adrian sat on the edge of the velvet mattress, shirtless, his muscular chest carved with old scars and the fresh, bandaged wound on his left shoulder. He looked at her with a depth of emotion that made his dangerous, terrifying reputation look like a child's fairy tale.
"You're out of your mind," Adrian murmured, his voice thick with awe. "You walked into a gunfight with a flashlight."
"I had a very good teacher," Hannah replied softly.
The door to the bedroom swung open. Claire stood on the threshold, her eyes red-rimmed and wide. When she saw her father sitting on the bed, bandaged but alive, she let out a breathless cry and launched herself across the room, burying her face in his uninjured shoulder.
"Daddy! You're okay!"
Adrian wrapped his strong arm around his daughter, holding her close, burying his face in her dark hair. He looked up at Hannah over Claire’s head, his dark eyes shining with absolute, undeniable devotion.
Three months later, the Westchester estate looked entirely different.
The heavy iron gates still kept out the criminals and the cowards, but inside, the cold marble floors echoed with the sound of laughter, baking timers, and a little girl practicing her piano scales.
On a bright Sunday afternoon, Hannah sat on the stone patio overlooking the manicured gardens, grading a stack of university counseling papers while sipping iced tea.
Footsteps approached from behind. Strong, warm arms wrapped around her waist, and a familiar, deep voice murmured against her ear.
"The board of directors is asking when you're going to officially make me an honest man, Hannah," Adrian whispered, pressing a soft kiss to her neck.
Hannah smiled, turning around in his embrace and looping her arms around his broad shoulders.
From the open French doors of the kitchen, seven-year-old Claire ran out holding two plates of warm chocolate chip cookies, her face dusted with flour, her smile radiant and completely unbroken.
"Mom!" Claire shouted, waving a cookie in the air. "Dad said we can go adopt a puppy if you say yes!"

Hannah looked from the glowing, happy little girl to the most feared mafia boss in New York—a man who had traded his armor for a family.
"Tell your dad," Hannah smiled, pressing her lips softly against Adrian's, "that the deal is officially closed."
