Chapter 5 - The Locked Safe at Blackwood Manor

Before Ethan could speak another word, the heavy wooden doors of the executive suite swung open again.

Denise Crowley, the chief housekeeping supervisor, marched into the office carrying a digital clipboard, flanked by two uniformed building security officers.

"Mr. Harrington!" Denise said, her voice dripping with artificial professionalism. "I am so deeply sorry for this intrusion. Our security desk flagged an unauthorized child on the executive level. Maria Delgado was explicitly told—"

"Get out," Ethan said without turning around.

Denise paused, caught off guard. "Sir? She brought a child into a secure corporate facility. It's a direct violation of union guidelines and company policy. I'm firing her immediately, and security will escort her off the premises—"

"Denise," Ethan said, standing up slowly.

When he turned to face her, the look in his eyes was so terrifyingly cold that the two security officers instinctively took a step back.

"You are fired," Ethan said softly. "Effective five seconds ago."

Denise’s mouth dropped open. "I—what? Mr. Harrington, I was only enforcing—"

"Clear out your desk," Ethan commanded, his voice ringing like iron. "If I see your face in this building by five o'clock, I will have my personal attorneys bankrupt you." He turned to the security guards. "You two. Stand outside this door. No one enters. Not my secretary, not the COO, and especially not Victor Sterling. If Victor comes to this floor, you detain him."

The guards nodded sharply. "Yes, sir."

Denise hurried out of the room, her cheeks burning red with humiliation.

Ethan turned back to Maria and Lily. The fierce rage in his eyes vanished, replaced by an earnest, desperate vulnerability.

"Where is the box?" Ethan asked Maria. "The wooden box with the letters."

"It’s at my apartment," Maria replied, her voice cautious. "In a locked floor safe beneath the closet."

"We're going there now," Ethan said, already grabbing his suit jacket from his chair.

"Mr. Harrington, you can't just leave," Maria warned. "Victor Sterling is in the building. I saw his car in the executive garage when I arrived. If he sees you leaving with me—"

"Let him see me," Ethan growled, his dark eyes flashing. "For eleven years, that man has sat in my boardroom, drinking my scotch, taking ten percent of my earnings, and watching me rot from the inside out. I am going to read my wife's letters, Maria. And then I am going to destroy him."

He walked over to Lily, dropping down to eye level. The billionaire who had never smiled in a photo for a decade offered the little girl a gentle, nervous smile.

"Lily," he said softly. "Would you like to ride in a very big, smooth car?"

Lily looked at her mother, who gave a reluctant, faint nod.

May you like

Lily held up Mr. Buttons. "Can Mr. Buttons come?"

"Mr. Buttons gets the front seat," Ethan promised.
