Chapter 10 - The Glass Tower Filled with Light

One year later.

The 40th floor of Harrington Tower was no longer cold, dark, or silent.

The sterile, gray leather couches had been replaced with soft, plush velvet sofas in warm cream and deep blue tones. Sunlight poured through the spotless glass windows, illuminating colorful framed finger-paintings that lined the pristine white walls.

In the corner of what used to be the executive suite stood a small wooden playhouse, complete with a pink toy kitchen, a drawing desk, and a miniature bookshelf packed with fairy tales.

Ethan sat on the floor, his custom dress shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows, his pants dusted with blue chalk. He was meticulously helping Lily draw a giant, smiling sun on a poster board.

"Higher, Daddy!" Lily giggled, nudging his hand. "The sun has to reach the clouds!"

"Higher it goes," Ethan laughed, extending the yellow crayon toward the top of the paper.

Maria walked into the office carrying two mugs of warm tea. She had just finished a three-hour board meeting for the foundation, which had already assisted over four thousand families across Chicago in its first year.

She set a mug on the mahogany desk, looking around the room with a deep sense of contentment.

"The building committee approved the new daycare center on the third floor today," Maria said, sitting down on the edge of the rug beside them. "It opens next month."

"Good," Ethan said, looking up at her with soft, loving eyes. "No mother in this building will ever have to hide her child in a breakroom again."

Lily set down her crayons, picked up Mr. Buttons, and snuggled directly between Ethan and Maria, wrapping her little arms around both of them.

"Daddy?" Lily asked, looking up at Ethan with her large, dark brown eyes—the very eyes that had saved his life on that cold Thursday afternoon.

"Yes, my sweet girl?"

"Are we staying in the cloud building forever?"

Ethan wrapped his arm around Maria’s waist, pulling her close, while resting his hand gently over his daughter's head. He looked out the floor-to-ceiling glass window at the bright, open sky over Chicago.

"We’re staying wherever we're together, Lily," Ethan whispered softly, pressing a kiss to her temple. "Because home isn't a tower. It's the people inside it."

Outside, the sun broke through the afternoon clouds, washing the entire 40th floor in a brilliant, beautiful, unstoppable light.
