Chapter 3 - The Shadow in the Ward

By 3:00 AM, ICU Bay One had been transformed into a fortress.
Four heavily armed guards in dark suits stood at the double glass doors. Outside the window, rain lashed against the glass, blurring the neon lights of downtown Port Lawson.
Inside the private bay, Adrian Vale lay hooked up to two IV drip lines, a clear oxygen mask covering his sharp, angular face. His chest rose and fell in a slow, rhythmic pattern. The pale, deathly gray color in his cheeks had slowly begun to fade, replaced by a faint flush of warm skin tone.
Grace sat in an armchair beside the bed, her hand resting over Lily’s small back as the toddler slept soundly on a folded wool blanket beside her.
A quiet knock sounded at the door.
Mason stepped inside, carrying two paper cups of black coffee from the staff breakroom. He handed one to Grace and sat down in the visitor chair across from her.
"How are you holding up?" Mason asked softly.
Grace took a small sip of the hot coffee. "I keep thinking about three years ago. When Adrian found me."
Mason gave a faint, rare smile. "He told me about that day. Said he hired a housekeeper who looked like she was ready to fight a tiger to feed her kid."
"I was terrified of him," Grace admitted, looking down at Adrian’s motionless face. "I had thirty-two dollars. My car had a flat tire in his driveway. When he sat me down in that grand dining room and ordered a full steak dinner just so I would eat... I realized he wasn't the monster the newspapers made him out to be."
"He's a monster to his enemies, Grace," Mason said grimly. "To the people he cares about? He'd burn this whole city to the ground to keep them safe."
"Who did this, Mason?" Grace asked, leaning forward. "Who wants him dead this badly?"
Mason looked toward the glass door, making sure the guards were in position before answering.
"Three weeks ago, Adrian refused to clear a shipment through Dock 14," Mason explained in a hushed tone. "It belonged to the Moretti family out of Boston. They wanted to use our shipping lines for illegal narcotics. Adrian told them Port Lawson doesn't move drugs. He operates in construction, real estate, and freight—no poison."
"And Moretti didn't like that," Grace realized.
"Moretti’s head lieutenant is a man named Julian Vance," Mason said, his jaw setting tight. "Vance is ruthless. He doesn't care about rules or territorial boundaries. He promised Moretti he’d take over Port Lawson before the winter set in."
Suddenly, Lily stirred on the folded blanket.
She sat up slowly, rubbing her eyes with her small hands. She didn't cry. Instead, her nose twitched twice, her small dark eyes sweeping around the sterile ICU room.
Grace felt an instant surge of panic. "Lily? What is it?"
Lily looked toward the heavy privacy curtains drawn across the observation window near the door.
"Mama," Lily whispered, her tiny voice trembling slightly.
Mason stood up immediately, his hand slipping inside his suit coat to grip the handle of his weapon. "What do you smell, Lily?"
Lily pointed her small finger straight toward the space beneath the privacy curtain.
"It smells like the wet copper pennies," Lily whispered. "The ones in the bottom of your purse."
Grace stared at her daughter. "Copper?"
"No," Mason whispered, his face turning completely pale as he realized what the child meant. "Not copper."
Fresh blood.
Mason drew his suppressed pistol in one lightning-fast motion, stepping silently toward the heavy curtain.
He grabbed the edge of the fabric and pulled it back.
Slumped against the base of the wall, hidden behind the curtain, was one of Mason’s private security guards. His neck was twisted at an impossible angle, a small pool of dark, fresh blood expanding across the white floor tiles beneath his collar.

Before Mason could call out to the other guards, the overhead lights in ICU Bay One violently flickered and died.
The room was plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
