Chapter 5 - The Harbor Safehouse

By 5:00 AM, a fleet of five black armored SUVs tore down the rain-slicked highway heading south away from Port Lawson.
The hospital had been placed on total lockdown by local federal agents, but Adrian Vale had already been moved. He sat in the middle row of the lead SUV, a fresh surgical dressing wrapped tightly around his midsection under a black cashmere sweater.
Grace sat beside him, holding Lily as the child slept fitfully against her shoulder. Mason sat in the front passenger seat, monitoring radio chatter from four different security channels.
"The shooter in the scrubs was identified, Boss," Mason reported, turning his head back toward Adrian. "His name was Paulie 'The Needle' Russo. A freelance hitman on Julian Vance’s payroll."
"Vance is getting desperate," Adrian said, his voice quiet, cold, and utterly terrifying. "He knew he couldn't beat us on the docks, so he tried to strike while I was under anesthesia."
He looked over at Grace, taking in her tired, pale face and the dirt smudges on her gray housekeeper uniform.
"I'm sorry, Grace," Adrian said softly. "I never meant for you or Lily to be dragged into this side of my life."
"You saved us three years ago, Adrian," Grace said, looking into his dark eyes. "When my ex-husband emptied my bank account and left me on the street with a newborn, nobody helped me. You gave me a home. You gave me a salary. You paid for Lily’s medical care when she had pneumonia."
"You earned every penny, Grace," Adrian replied gently. "You kept my estate running when I had no one else I could trust."
"Uncle Adrian?" a tiny voice chirped from Grace’s lap.
Lily sat up, blinking her big brown eyes as she looked at him through the dim light of the SUV interior.
Adrian leaned closer, resting his elbows on his knees. "Yes, little rabbit?"
"Are we going to the big house with the tall trees?" she asked.
"No, sweetheart," Adrian said gently. "We're going to a special house near the ocean for a few days. Where it's safe."
Lily tilted her head, her nose twitching slightly as she smelled the leather interior of the vehicle.
"The car smells like gasoline," she said matter-of-factly.
Mason laughed quietly from the front seat. "She's got a sharp nose, Boss."
"She saved my life tonight, Mason," Adrian said, his tone turning intensely serious. "If she hadn't smelled that anaerobic infection in my wound, I would have died in that hospital bed before Vance’s hitman even reached the fourth floor."
He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box. He opened it, revealing a beautiful, hand-carved silver rabbit pendant hanging from a sturdy white-gold chain.
"I had this made for her birthday next month," Adrian said, holding the necklace out to Lily. "Conrad carved it from solid silver."
Lily’s eyes lit up with absolute wonder. "A bunny!"
"It's a special bunny, Lily," Adrian said softly, fastening the delicate clasp around her small neck. "It means as long as you wear it, no one in this city will ever hurt you. You have the protection of the Vale family."

Grace looked at Adrian, her chest tightening with an emotion she couldn't fully name. In the criminal underworld, wearing a Vale emblem meant absolute immunity—a declaration that harming the wearer meant facing the full, terrifying power of Adrian’s entire empire.
Suddenly, the lead SUV slammed its brakes, the tires shrieking against the wet asphalt as the vehicle skidded to a sudden halt.
