Chapter 6 - Uncovering the Ledger

By dawn, the traitor within the inner circle was fully exposed.
The microchip hidden inside Mr. Bunny wasn't just a ledger of embezzlement; it was a complete digital archive of the Ghost Syndicate’s operations over the past decade, detailing how Don Romano and Marcus Vance had conspired to assassinate Alessandro’s older brother, take over the Lombardy ports, and frame rival factions to start a full-scale mafia war in Milan.
Alessandro sat at his mahogany desk, reviewing the decrypted files on a secure monitor.
I stood near the window, watching the morning sun break through the clouds over the estate. Emma was downstairs in the grand kitchen, happily eating pancakes made by the head chef, who had taken a soft spot for the brave little girl.
“Don Romano’s estate has been surrounded by my men,” Alessandro said without looking up from the screen. “By noon, he will be brought here to answer for his crimes before the remaining council of bosses.”
“And Vivian?” I asked quietly.
“Vivian is her father’s accomplice,” Alessandro replied coldly. “She knew about the smuggling routes through her family’s fashion houses. She helped launder the blood money.” He looked up, his dark eyes meeting mine. “She is being shipped off to a secure convent in Sicily today. She will never set foot in Milan again.”
I walked over to the desk, looking down at the stark reality of the world Alessandro ruled.
“You live in a terrifying world, Mr. Moretti,” I said softly. “Every day is war. Every person is a potential enemy.”
“It was,” Alessandro corrected, standing up and walking toward me. He stopped just a foot away, his presence warm and commanding. “Before yesterday, this house was a tomb filled with ghosts and enemies in expensive suits. But when your daughter stood in that hallway and told Vivian that her mother worked harder than anyone else... and when she looked into my eyes and told me Mr. Bunny thought I looked sad... something changed.”

My breath hitched as he reached out, his calloused fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from my face.
“I didn't know how to feel human anymore, Clara,” he murmured, his voice husky. “You and Emma... you brought light into a house that hadn't seen the sun in five years.”
