Chapter 9 - The Promise Under the Sun

The sun dipped toward the horizon, casting a golden hue across the terracotta roofs of Milan.

That evening, the estate hosted a quiet dinner—not for mob bosses or corrupt politicians, but for a small circle of loyal friends, including Victor, the chief enforcer who had helped us secure the east wing, and the estate cooks who had spoiled Emma with pastries.

After dinner, while Emma was fast asleep in her bed, Alessandro led me out to the private rose garden behind the east wing.

Fairy lights twinkled in the branches of the olive trees, casting a magical glow over the stone path.

“Clara,” Alessandro said, stopping beside the old stone fountain where the water trickled softly into the basin.

I turned to look at him, my heart doing a familiar, fluttering somersault. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.

My breath caught.

“Alessandro... what is this?” I whispered.

He opened the box. Inside rested a stunning, vintage ring—a delicate band of platinum set with a flawless, deep amber diamond that matched the exact shade of my eyes.

“When you walked into my villa four months ago, you were just a tired widow trying to survive a harsh world,” Alessandro said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with raw emotion. “You carried no weapons, no power, no money. But you brought something infinitely more valuable than an empire.”

He took my hand, sliding the ring gently onto my finger.

“You brought a heart that wasn't afraid to stand up to monsters. You gave my daughter a reason to smile, and you taught me that even a man whose hands are stained with blood can be redeemed by love. Will you stay in this house, Clara? Not as a guest, not as a housekeeper... but as my wife, and the true queen of my life?”

May you like

Tears spilled over my eyelashes, but a radiant smile broke across my face.

“Yes,” I whispered, throwing my arms around his neck. “Yes, Alessandro, a thousand times yes.”
