Chapter 7 - The Interrogation and the Testimony

The preliminary hearing at the Denver District Court two weeks later was a media circus.

Local news vans crowded the courthouse steps, eager to cover the horrifying case of the "Freezer Child." Inside courtroom 302, Judge Harrison presided over the arraignment with an expression of profound disgust.

Taylor and Evelyn sat at the defense table, dressed in grey inmate jumpsuits. Taylor looked pale, her hair unwashed, refusing to make eye contact with the gallery. Evelyn sat rigid, her jaw clenched, glaring hatefully toward the prosecutor's table.

I sat in the front row, holding Lily’s hand. We had prepared for this moment with the help of a brilliant child advocate and a court-appointed therapist. Lily didn't have to face the courtroom directly; instead, her pre-recorded forensic interview, conducted by a certified child specialist, was played on the courtroom monitors.

On the screen, Lily’s small, brave voice filled the quiet room.

“Grandma put me in the dark box because I spilled my milk... Mommy watched from the kitchen door and told me to be quiet so the neighbors wouldn't hear... I was so cold, Daddy. I thought I was going to turn into ice.”

A collective gasp rippled through the gallery. Several jurors wiped tears from their eyes.

Even Taylor broke down on the stand, sobbing hysterically as her defense attorney’s arguments crumbled under the weight of the digital evidence, the financial audits, and the damning security footage.

When the judge called a recess to review the final evidentiary packets, Taylor’s defense counsel approached the prosecutor with a plea negotiation proposal.
