Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

One year after the darkest night of my life, we celebrated Lily’s seventh birthday.

It wasn't a quiet affair. Our backyard was filled with laughter, colorful balloons, and half a dozen of her new school friends running through the grass while Buster the golden retriever chased a tennis ball in circles.

I stood by the patio grill flipping burgers, watching Lily blow out the candles on a massive chocolate cake adorned with glowing sparklers.

“Make a big wish!” one of her friends shouted.

Lily closed her eyes tightly, her hands clasped together in front of her. When she opened them, a radiant, confident smile lit up her face as she blew out every single sparkler in one powerful breath. The crowd erupted into cheers and applause.

Later, after the guests had gone and the sun had dipped below the mountain peaks, leaving behind a sky dusted with brilliant stars, Lily walked over to where I was packing up the last of the lawn chairs.

She held up a small, hand-drawn birthday card and handed it to me.

Inside, written in slightly shaky second-grade handwriting, were the words: To the best dad in the whole world. Thank you for pulling me out of the cold. I love you forever.

I felt a hot tear slip down my cheek, not of sorrow, but of profound, overwhelming gratitude. I knelt down, pulled my daughter into my arms, and held her close against my heart.

“I love you too, sweet pea,” I whispered, looking out past the porch lights toward the vast, beautiful, open horizon. “Forever and always.”
